Hurricane Rafael hits Cuba

Hurricane Rafael hit western Cuba as a Category 3 storm yesterday. It had sustained wind speeds of 115 mph. The island’s electrical grid was shut down, leaving 10 million residents without power.

Weather forecasters said the hurricane will linger in the Gulf of Mexico and potentially weaken. Forecasters are not sure if it will move towards the U.S. coast. The hurricane will stay in the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend, so it’s a slow-moving storm.

43 monkeys escape from South Carolina facility

At least 43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from a facility in South Carolina called Alpha Genesis, which breeds monkeys for bio-research services, such as research on finding cures for diseases.

The facility is located in the city of Yemasse. Its police department said the monkeys are very young females weighing approximately 6-7 lbs. Police advised local residents to keep doors and windows secured and to call 911 immediately if they see any of the monkeys and avoid approaching them. Police said they are using thermal imaging cameras to find the monkeys.

Alpha Genesis said these monkeys are young and have never been used for testing, so they would not carry any type of disease.
