Thursday, November 18 top stories
It is Thursday, November 18. Here are today’s top stories.
In Temple, Texas, a woman named Amanda Martinez was arrested for throwing a bowl of soup on an employee’s face at a restaurant last week. She was charged with assault causing bodily injury.
Local news explained that Martinez picked up an order of soup at a restaurant called the Sol De Jalisco, but then returned to the restaurant to complain that the soup was so hot that it melted the plastic lid. She then threw it at the employee’s face and left. But it was all caught on video and Martinez was arrested on Wednesday morning. Here is a video clip of the incident, which was posted by the restaurant on their Facebook page.

The employee’s name is Jannelle Broland and she is the manager of the restaurant. She said in an interview that her eyes and nose felt like it was burning and that she was in shock. It seems like she didn’t suffer any serious burns. Martinez is now banned from the restaurant.
Yesterday the House voted to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) for tweeting out a video meme that depicted a photoshopped image of his face on an anime swordsman attacking an anime version of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The video also shows the Gosar character attacking a large image of President Joe Biden. The video included clips of border patrol agents standing watch over groups of migrants and made it seem like a war between good and evil.
If you want to see the video, the link is in the transcript. Gosar’s team created the video and Gosar posted it last Sunday.
There was controversy on whether the video was violent or if it was just a symbol of what Republicans are feeling.
On the House floor last night, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said the video depicted the murder of a member of Congress.
Gosar said on the floor that the video is about the battle against this administration’s open-border policies.
All Democrats and two Republicans (Cheney and Kinzinger) voted to censure, while all the remaining Republicans voted against. It was a 222-208 vote. It is yet another example of the festering division in Congress.

Travis McMichael took the stand in his murder trial for the death of Ahmaud Arbery on Wednesday, who was shot and killed on a road as he was jogging almost two years ago. McMichael said he wanted to stop Arbery because he believed he was the same man who was seen earlier that month entering a house under construction. He said he shot at Arbery because he was running at him and grabbed his shotgun. He said it felt like a life-or-death situation. Axios said McMichael will continue to take the stand today.
The jury in the Kyle Rittenhouse homicide case in Wisconsin has deliberated for two full days on Tuesday and Wednesday. The jury is made up of five men and seven women. The jury has requested to watch video evidence of the shootings that killed two men and wounded a third. Rittenhouse’s defense team has requested a mistrial over two separate issues but the judge has not ruled on either motion. At the time of signing this news, the jury is now beginning their third day of deliberations. CNN reported that five schools near the Kenosha County Courthouse have switched to virtual instructions out of concerns with increasing activity surrounding the courthouse.
On Tuesday, one of famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits sold for $34.9 million in an auction. The painting is called, “Diego y yo” (Diego and I) and it shows Frida with her husband Diego Rivera, another famed Mexican artist. It is one of the last self-portraits done by Frida before she died in 1954.
There are concerns about the whereabouts of a Chinese tennis star named Peng Shuai. She posted on a Chinese social media platform called Weibo this month an accusation that a powerful Chinese political leader named Zhang Gaoli raped her three years ago. The post was later deleted. Peng is now missing and some international tennis stars are speaking up on her whereabouts and her safety.
On Wednesday, a Chinese news outlet published an email purportedly from Peng that said she was doing fine, resting at home, and that the allegation of sexual assault is not true. The Women’s Tennis Association chairman said he is not convinced because the statement was released by Chinese state media and that it only makes him even more concerned. There are calls for independent proof that Peng is safe.
That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
