Thursday, May 7 coronavirus and top news briefs

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Thursday, May 7. Here are coronavirus updates and top news briefs.

ABC News reported that a U.S. military service member who works at the White House has tested positive for coronavirus. CNN reported that the individual was a valet. President Trump was tested and it came out negative. Trump said he knows the individual and that he has had very little contact with him.

Last week another 3.2 million people filed for unemployment insurance. That means a total of 33 million people reported they lost their jobs since the middle of March.

There are almost 4 million cases of COVID-19 in the world. The U.S. has 1.2 million cases with 75,000 deaths and 190,000 people recovering.

On Wednesday evening in Oklahoma City, two McDonald’s employees were shot by two customers who were angry over not being able to dine inside. A third employee was injured in a fight. Police said the three victims, two females and a male, two of them 17, are in the hospital but not in a life-threatening condition. The suspects are in custody.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott intervened in the case of Shelley Luther, a Dallas-area salon owner who was ordered jailed for a week starting yesterday because she kept her business open in violation of the state's stay-at-home orders. Gov. Abbott modified his executive orders to eliminate confinement as a punishment. Luther walked out of jail this afternoon. Gov. Abbott said he refused to allow Texans who had their businesses shut down be thrown in jail.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan’s stay-at-home order would be extended until May 28. The order does roll back several restrictions on business activity, such as allowing manufacturing workers to resume working on May 11. The extended order is sure to be very controversial because Gov. Whitmer is seeing a lot of opposition from protesters who have showed up to the capitol, some armed with long rifles. She is also facing lawsuits from the Michigan state House and Senate and three church leaders who say the stay-home order and the state of emergency in place violates their constitutional rights.

Now, top news briefs.

An Indianapolis man named Sean “DaDon” Reed was shot and killed by Indianapolis police while his phone was recording on Facebook Live. This happened yesterday. The video shows him filming himself driving and saying he needed help. He then stops the car, gets out, and seems to run away while still filming himself. He is seen grimacing and it looks like he fell down. The phone drops and films the blue sky. But before this, a video frame reveals a police officer behind him. heavy.com said multiple gunshots are heard in the video. The police department said shots were fired by both officers and suspect and that the driver fired first at the officer. There is now an investigation with the officer placed on leave, which is standard policy for officer-involved shootings. The New York Times reported that both the officer and the victim is black. An officer was heard saying “Think it is going to be a closed casket, homie” and there was laughter. There were about 100 people who gathered near the scene of the shooting to protest.

Tara Reade, who accused Joe Biden of sexual assault in 1993, did a video interview with Megyn Kelly. She said Biden needs to “step forward and be held accountable” and that she wished he would step down from the race. Reade said she would absolutely testify under oath and be cross-examined and that she is willing to take a polygraph test if Biden did too. Biden has denied the allegations.

Now, the last news story. The Justice Department said they would drop their case against Michael Flynn. He pleaded guilty in 2017 to charges of lying to the FBI during the Mueller investigation, but his case was recently reviewed by the Trump Department of Justice. About a week ago a document was uncovered showing that in 2017, FBI agents debated amongst themselves on whether they wanted Flynn to admit wrongdoing or to catch him in a lie. President Trump said “dirty cops” at the FBI tormented him. Trump also accused the Obama administration of targeting Flynn. On the other side, there are questions on whether the DOJ’s leader, Attorney General Bill Barr, is too close to the White House and acting impartially. A top Democrat said it was outrageous and that the evidence against Flynn is overwhelming. Flynn was fired by the Trump administration during the first month of their administration in 2017. The White House said Flynn lied to Vice President Mike Pence about what he told a Russian ambassador about U.S. sanctions against Russia that were levied by the Obama administration just before the transition. Flynn had conversations with a Russian ambassador and told him to not worry. Then there was the lie to the Vice President which led to his firing and the FBI charge. Now it’s all dropped. It’s a controversy that has persisted since Donald Trump’s election.
