Thursday, June 11 top news briefs

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth. It is Thursday, June 11. Here are top news briefs.

General Mark Milley, who is the most senior military officer in the U.S., has apologized for walking with President Donald Trump from the White House to a church across Lafayette Square where protesters were forced out by riot police. Milley said “I should not have been there… My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics.”

In Seattle, a video showed hundreds of protesters who went inside city hall. They demanded their mayor to step down for not controlling police brutality. Others have “taken over” a part of downtown Seattle and called it the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ). There is a police station that is empty and “CHAZ members” are doing their own patrols. President Trump said Seattle was taken over by domestic terrorists and warned that if the Washington governor and the Seattle mayor couldn’t take control, he would take back the city.

There were news reports from Texas that said a black man named Javier Ambler died last year after police officers used stun guns on him while he cried for help and said he was sick and couldn’t breathe. The news reports said there was a “Live PD” from A&E crew that filmed the arrest, but the footage was destroyed because of an A&E policy to not air a death and to destroy footage after a certain amount of time.

There is police body camera footage of the arrest that was released this month. It shows several officers forcing Ambler on his stomach as he screamed that he had heart issues and couldn’t breathe. The arrest happened after a 22-minute car chase that ended when Ambler crashed his SUV. He was unarmed and his death was ruled a homicide from heart disease and forcible restraint. An investigation said the officers did nothing wrong. This happened last year and with the news about him, this would be yet another name in a long list of black individuals who died while in police custody, and this is now just surfacing in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement. There is sure to be more news coverage of Ambler’s death and the circumstances surrounding it.

Today A&E announced they are cancelling “Live PD” amid the controversy over its deleted tapes. It is the second police TV show to be cancelled in as many days — “COPS” was cancelled yesterday. A&E said they decided to cancel because of the “critical time in our nation’s history.”

The founder and CEO of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, has resigned and retired yesterday after he started a controversy by his comments on the Black Lives Matter movement. He said he didn’t want CrossFit to put out a public statement of support for Black Lives Matter because he personally didn’t mourn George Floyd’s death. He said the death had nothing to do with race. He later seemed to mock a tweet that said racism was a public health issue by saying, “Floyd-19.” After strong backlash that included gyms cutting ties with CrossFit and sponsors leaving the company, Glassman retired.

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling is now going through a controversy over her views on gender and transgender individuals. She said she is concerned that “woman” as a political and biological class would be eroded and that it would be dangerous for women in bathrooms changing rooms. LGBTQ rights organizations said Rowling’s comments showed prejudice against transgender people and is a part of the problem that is slowing down their progress to get civil rights. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, actors in the “Harry Potter” movies, have criticized Rowling and made statements of support for transgender women and their identities.

CNN released a presidential election poll on Monday that showed Democrat Joe Biden holding a 55% to 41% lead over President Trump among registered voters. The Trump campaign sent a “cease and desist” letter to CNN telling them that the poll was intended to mislead voters and demanded a retraction and an apology. CNN said they stand by their poll and that it is the first time in their 40-year history that they were threatened with legal action over a poll.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted and then quickly deleted an image of himself giving a speech to about 50 campaign staffers. It probably has to do with the fact that the campaign staffers were standing very close to each other and none were wearing masks.

The U.S. now has over 2 million cases of Covid-19. We remember when we only had “one” case back in January. Today the Dow Jones index went down 1,800 points because investors are concerned there will be a second wave of Covid-19 cases. Texas reported 2,500 new cases today, which is the highest number ever for the state. Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina are seeing significant spikes.

That is all for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
