The Miami-Dade County Fire Chief said the search for survivors in the Surfside condo collapse has ended and now their mission is to recover the bodies of those still missing and presumed dead. Sixty bodies have been recovered so far, with eighty still missing.
A CNN camera showed a closer look at the rubble. It is a huge heap of broken concrete and twisted metal.
It is heartbreaking to imagine that it was once a building with many homes and families.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said 130 people in the state died from Covid-19 last month and that none of them were vaccinated. He also said over 90% of new Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state were unvaccinated people.
Darnella Frazier, who was awarded a Pulitzer Prize special citation for filming the murder of George Floyd, posted on Facebook on Tuesday night that her uncle, Leneal, was killed by Minneapolis police during a car chase involving someone else.
Minneapolis police said that an officer was pursing the driver of a carjacked vehicle when it collided with another car driven by Leneal, who died at a hospital.
Frazier’s Facebook post criticized the officer for doing a high speed chase on a residential street, saying “Minneapolis police has cost my whole family a big loss…” She posted images of the scene of the crash, which showed a SUV with severe damage.
News reports say there is an outbreak of Covid-19 among staffers at the California state Capitol and that mask mandates are back in place. At least nine people who work in the building tested positive for the coronavirus, with four of them fully vaccinated.
Fox2 News explained that the Capitol reopened last month with mask requirements in public places such as hallways and committee rooms, but fully vaccinated staff and lawmakers were allowed to remove their masks while working in their offices.
Now all staff and lawmakers at the Capitol and related office buildings must wear a mask and those who are unvaccinated must be tested twice a week.
President Joe Biden said the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan will conclude on August 31. Most of the U.S. military presence in the country have pulled out, and news reports say the Taliban has made large territorial gains and there is a rise in violence.
The U.S. intelligence community said the Afghan government could collapse by next year with a Taliban takeover.
Today Biden said it is the right and responsibility of the Afghan people alone to decide their future and how they want to run their country. Biden said the Afghan military and government can sustain the country and defend itself from the Taliban, but that it’s up to them to stay united.
Biden said his administration will help to send Afghan nationals who helped U.S. troops to move to various host countries as they await U.S. visas this month.
