Famous Amos founder dies at 88

I’m sure you’ve eaten “Famous Amos” cookies. The founder, Wally Amos, passed away on Tuesday, August 13 at the age of 88. His children said the cause was complications of dementia. Wally started his business in 1975 in Los Angeles and sold small, bite-sized cookies that came from a family recipe. The cookies were a hit and the business expanded to selling cookies in packaged units in supermarkets. Wally then had some business struggles and sold the company. He later started another cookie company in Hawaii. Wally’s children said he was a “true original Black American hero” and a “great American success story.”

Five arrested on drug charges related to Matthew Perry’s death

ABC News said five people, including two doctors, were arrested this morning on federal drug charges related to the death of actor Matthew Perry, who had ketamine in his system. Authorities said the two doctors were the initial sources of the ketamine supply but Perry switched to a new source due to the costs and got it from a woman that was known as the “Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles.” One of those who were arrested was Perry’s personal assistant. Authorities will share more details later today. Perry died on October 28, 2023 after he was found unresponsive in a jacuzzi at his home.

Police officer helps boy save drowning mother

On July 24 in southeast Texas, a police officer helped a 12-year-old boy to save his mother after she had a seizure while driving and crashed into a small pond. Police bodycam video shows the boy, Dwight Winbush, running up to the officer, Charles Cobb, on a highway and asking for immediate help. They drove to the pond, where they saw a car partially submerged. The boy’s 16-year-old sister got out, but the mother, Jonquetta, was still in the car. The officer and other passerbys worked quickly to pull her out and she was unconscious. The officer did CPR on the spot and she was taken to a hospital, where she spent over three weeks on a ventilator. She is now breathing on her own and recovering. The officer, Cobb, and the other good Samaritans were honored by the city of West Orange with a life-saving award.
