Brooklyn shooter updates
ABC 7 NY reported that Frank James, the suspected Brooklyn subway shooter, called the NYPD’s tip line to report himself about an hour before he was arrested. James told the police, “I think you’re looking for me. I’m seeing my picture all over the news and I’ll be around this McDonald’s.”
Several other people, including a Syrian immigrant named Zack Tahhan, said they saw James on the street and alerted police who were patrolling nearby. A video of James being detained shows that he was near a McDonald’s.
The NYPD will have to figure out what to do with the $50,000 reward offered for information leading to Frank James’ arrest.
There are images that show James entering the subway system at a different station prior to the attack on Tuesday morning. James is seen wearing construction gear and carrying a large black bag.
James appeared in federal court today for the first time and spoke briefly to say he understands his charges of terrorist attacks or other violence against a mass transportation system. A judge ordered him to remain in custody without bail.

Elon Musk offers to buy Twitter for $43B
Elon Musk has offered to buy Twitter for about $43 billion in cash. Musk already owns about 9% and now he wants 100%. He said he invested in Twitter because he believes in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe and that it needs to go private so it can thrive. The Twitter company said it would review the proposal.
Patrick Lyoya fatally shot by cop
On April 4, a Grand Rapids, Michigan police officer fatally shot an unarmed Black man named Patrick Lyoya. The police department recently released videos that show a white male police officer pulling over Lyoya. The officer asked him why his car’s license plate didn’t match with the vehicle. Lyoya tried to run away but the officer caught him and both wrestled in front of several homes for over a minute.
The officer pulled out his yellow taser, but Lyoya grabbed it. Both wrestled again and fell to the ground. Lyoya was on his stomach and facing the floor. The officer was on top and pulled out his gun and shot at Lyoya while he was looking down.
The Grand Rapids police chief said he released the videos for transparency purposes. He confirmed that Lyoya was shot in the head and that it is a tragedy. A prosecutor said he is investigating and will decide whether to file charges.
Michigan Gov. Whitmer said Lyoya is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He had two young daughters and five siblings. The governor said he had his whole life ahead of him.
Florida, Kentucky limits abortion access
Florida Gov. DeSantis (R) signed into law a bill that bans abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which is similar to a Mississippi law. The Florida bill provides an exception only if the pregnancy poses a serious risk to the person carrying it.
In Kentucky, its Republican-majority legislature overrode the state’s Democratic Gov. Beshear’s veto on a law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks. As a result, the Kentucky law now goes into effect and it has various strict measures that Kentucky’s clinics said is too difficult or expensive to follow and are now forced to stop offering abortions. So there are no abortion services in Kentucky.
News analysts say the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is currently reviewing the Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks and is likely to rule in favor of the law. They will announce their decision in the end of June. The fact that the Supreme Court is reviewing the Mississippi law has led several Republican-led states to pass stricter legislation limiting abortion access.
