Trump’s speech to Congress

Here are some highlights of President Trump’s joint address to Congress last night. He was applauded many times by Republicans but was scowled at by Democrats.

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) caused a scene when he stood up and heckled Trump, expressing disagreement that Trump’s 2024 election victory was a “mandate” (from America). The sergeant-at-arms escorted Green out.

Trump praised Elon Musk and his DOGE team for cutting government spending and firing many federal employees. Trump said his work will help the economy.

Trump promised that he would work hard to bring egg prices back down, blaming former President Biden for high egg prices.

Trump said he wants to reclaim the Panama Canal and possibly get Greenland for national security reasons.

Trump said he has designated Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

There was one touching moment that is going viral — a 13-year-old boy named Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, was made an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service. Trump said he aspired to become a police officer and surprised him with the Secret Service honor.

Supreme Court rules against Trump’s request to freeze foreign aid

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against the Trump administration in their request to keep about 2 billion dollars in foreign aid funds frozen. The foreign aid has already been approved by Congress and is managed by the State Department and USAID.

The money was supposed to go towards international organizations and contractors seeking payment for work that they had already completed.

The Supreme Court said the money should be released but did not say when. CNN said this allows the White House to continue to dispute the issue in lower courts.

Tariffs on cars from Mexico and Canada delayed for 1 month

The White House said it would delay tariffs on any automobiles coming through Mexico and Canada for one month after talking with the Big Three auto dealers of Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors.

The White House said the companies should use the one-month delay to shift production to the U.S.

There are still 25% tariffs in place on other Canadian and Mexican goods.

Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Texas) unexpectedly passed away last night after he experienced a medical emergency.

Turner was 70 and had just become a Congressman in January. He previously had bone cancer.

Ontario’s leader, Premier Doug Ford, threatened to impose a 25% surcharge on the electricity that Ontario provides to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota in response to President Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

Ford said he’s been left with no choice but desires to work with the U.S. for a better future. Ford said in a worst-case scenario, he would cut off the electricity completely.

New York and Michigan said they will generally be okay if there are disruptions, while Minnesota seemed to be more concerned.

I live in Michigan so I’m hoping I can still keep the lights on.
