Couple sentenced for forcing five adopted Black children to work as ‘slaves’
NBC News reported that a couple who recently moved to West Virginia were sentenced to over 150 years in prison each for forcing their five adopted Black children to work as slaves. The couple’s names are Jeanne Kay Whitefeather and Donald Lantz.
NBC explained the couple adopted the children from a shelter for homeless and vulnerable youths when they lived in Minnesota. They moved to another state and then to West Virginia in 2023.
Police went to the couple’s home in October 2023 to conduct a welfare check after a neighbor reported that they saw children being locked in a shed. Police said the children were sleeping on a concrete floor and there was no running water or a bathroom in the shed.
Prosecutors said the couple targeted the children for forced labor because of their race. The couple were charged with human trafficking, child neglect, and forced labor.
NBC said the children said in court remarks that the couple were “monsters,” “horrible,” and “not right.”
Their 150-year sentences is effectively a life sentence for them.

23andMe files for bankruptcy protection
BBC reported that 23andMe, the DNA testing company, has filed for bankruptcy protection and announced that its co-founder and CEO has resigned. The company will try to sell itself with the supervision of a court.
California’s attorney general urged customers to delete their data from the website out of privacy concerns.
BBC explained that the company struggled because customers did not have much to return for once they had paid for a DNA report and that an effort to launch a subscription service proved unsuccessful.

Canada to hold elections April 28
On Sunday, new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for a snap election on April 28.
Carney said he needs a strong mandate to deal with the threat posed by U.S. President Trump, who “wants to break us so America can own us.”
If you remember, Trump previously said he wants to annex Canada and make it the 51st state. He has also imposed tough tariffs on Canada.
The election will be a battle between two major political parties, the Liberals with Carney, who took over the recently-departed PM Trudeau, and the Conservatives, with Pierre Poilievre as their leader.
Poilievre said he wants to put Canada first and make the country more self-reliant and better equipped to stand up to Trump.

Russia and Ukraine attack each other amid ceasefire talks
BBC News reported that Russia and Ukraine have continued to attack each other while the U.S. is trying to lead ceasefire talks with both sides.
Ukraine said Russian bombs hit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and killed at least three people. There were also other strikes on an eastern Ukrainian city that injured 65 people, including children, when an apartment and a hospital were hit.
Russia said they intercepted many attack drones launched by Ukraine.
BBC explained that government officials on both sides said the talks may take a while. A Ukrainian lawmaker said everything depends on Russian President Putin, expressing concern that he doesn’t seem interested in a ceasefire.
