Super Bowl Recap; Kansas Cities; ASL performance
Last night the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV (54) by defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31 to 20. Kansas City’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes received the Super Bowl MVP award.
The Chiefs team is based in Kansas City, Missouri. It can be confusing because there is a Kansas City, Kansas, and both Kansas Cities are right next to each other at the state border line.
President Trump mixed up the states when he tweeted a congratulatory message to the Chiefs last night, saying, “You represented the Great State of Kansas.” He deleted that tweet and tweeted the same message but replaced “Kansas” with “Missouri.”
Kansas City, Kansas is known as “KCK” and Kansas City, Missouri is known as “KCMO.”
The Kansas City Public Library explained on an online article that the state of Missouri first incorporated the area as the “City of Kansas” in 1853 and renamed it Kansas City in 1889.
At that time in 1853, Kansas was not a state but a territory. It became a state in 1861 and people who lived across the river/border decided to name their towns “Kansas City, Kansas.”
The name “Kansas” came from a Native American tribe, the Kaw Nation, that lived in the area before American settlers came.
So, congratulations to Kansas City, Missouri, but here’s also congratulations to the state of Kansas as well.
Now, let’s discuss the National Anthem. The deaf performer this year was Christine Sun Kim.
We already know that there have been complaints for years that the ASL performer only gets two or three seconds of national television air time or is ignored completely. This is for the national broadcast that is on TVs across the world. Christine was spotted for only a few seconds and she did not get a dedicated PIP area or a split screen on TV.
We were told that on FoxSports.com there would be a dedicated camera/feed for Christine’s performance, but the camera ended up pulling away from her and focused on athletes in the sideline. It caused many in the deaf community to feel “doubly” frustrated because there was no way to watch it.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), who works with the NFL to select deaf performers, usually have someone on the field to film it and the video has been posted on NAD’s Facebook and YouTube pages. I’ve shared it on Moth Facebook and will include the link below.
The same thing happened last year with performer Aarron Loggins — he only received a few seconds of air time and the NAD posted a video of his performance the day after.
Marlee Matlin posted a video on Twitter to call on all networks to show the performer on TV the “WHOLE” time.
It’s frustrating, yes, but I was reminded by Kriston Lee Pumphrey, a previous Super Bowl signer, that we can be grateful that ASL does have a platform in the stadium and is recognized by the NFL.
Still, to have equal accessibility and equal respect of ASL — that’s something that we will have to fight for. We’ll have to take that corner on the TV.
Christine wrote an opinion article in the New York Times about her performance and expressed her frustration.
She said, “To be honest, it was a huge disappointment — a missed opportunity…” and “Through thrilled and excited to be on the field serving the deaf community, I was angry and exasperated.” She said she hopes the despite the failure of Fox to make the performance accessible to all, she provided a public service for deaf viewers. Her article touches on many issues of social justice and accessibility, it’s a good read, the link is below.
Again, you can watch the performance on NAD’s Facebook or YouTube, and congratulations to Christine Sun Kim for being the first Deaf Asian American to be the performer.

Now, let’s cover three top news briefs.
Texas A&M Commerce shooting in Dallas area
This morning at the Texas A&M Commerce campus, which is north of Dallas, two women died in a shooting at a residence hall. A 2-year-old boy was injured and was hospitalized but is in stable condition. It is not known if the two women were students. University police said there are no other threats and they did not say they are looking for any suspects, so this could be a murder-suicide situation.
Coronavirus updates
There are now 11 cases in the U.S. of people infected with coronavirus and the death toll in China is now at 361. There are now more fatalities in mainland China than the SARS outbreak. But Chinese health experts say there are patients who have been recovering so they are optimistic that they can figure out how to treat infected patients. The virus is considered a close cousin of the SARS and may have came from bats. Maybe a bat infected an animal that then in turn infected a human, or maybe it was a direct bat-to-human transmission. There is a new hospital in Wuhan, China that has been constructed in 10 days. It is not completely finished, but it will have 1,000 beds. There will be a second facility with 1,500 beds.
