Suspect arrested in murder of deaf man in Houston

Almost a year ago I reported that a 28-year-old deaf man named Matthew Harris was fatally shot in a carjacking at a gas station parking lot in Houston.

At the time, police were only able to release images of the suspect from surveillance cameras but couldn’t identify him.

Two weeks ago, on March 25, Houston Police announced they have arrested and charged the suspect with capital murder. They identified him as Christian Dillard (21). Police explained that Dillard was already in jail on unrelated charges and when police were able to identify him as a suspect, he admitted he was involved with Harris’ death.

In my report from last year, I explained that Harris’ friend and former roommate, Jeremiah R. Sammons, said Harris went to the gas station to buy cigarettes and beer and did not realize that a gunman was trying to rob him.

Police said last year that the suspect approached Harris, shot him in his abdomen, took Harris’ things and shoes, and then took his car and drove off. He later left it at a nearby location and fled.

Sammons gave a statement to “The Daily Moth” on his thoughts that the suspected killer has been charged. Here it is.

3.6 FULL TEXT: Statement from Jeremiah Sammons: The one year anniversary of Matt’s death will be April 5th... I am relieved that after almost a year of waiting, his murderer is finally being brought to justice. Matt spent the happiest years of his life playing football for Gallaudet University while making friends on and off the field. For all of us that knew and loved Matt, there is an emptiness in our hearts from losing him.

Thank you for the statement, Jeremiah. As he stated, Harris was a Gallaudet student-athlete and in his death left behind two children.

Jail records show that Dillard was arrested on February 20, 2021 on a charge of assaulting a police officer and prior to that, on October 20, 2020, he was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Now with his capital murder charge, if convicted, he faces the death penalty or life in prison.
