Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passes away at 87

In very shocking and sad news, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) has passed away from pancreatic cancer. She was 87 years old.

RBG had multiple health scares over the past years and multiple surgeries, but she always seemed to come back as strong as ever.

She died today surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C. She will have a private burial at the Arlington National Cemetery.

What will the political impact be on America?

President Donald Trump plans to nominate a replacement in the coming days, according to ABC News.

President Trump has already appointed two justices in his presidency, and although this is an election year, Trump has enough time in office even if he loses. He would have until January 2021.

The Senate is the body that approves nominees to the Supreme Court. Senate Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky) said he would allow a vote on the Senate floor.

NPR reported that Ginsburg told her granddaughter a few days ago that her “most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

But that is unlikely to happen, as President Trump and the Republican Party will not miss this opportunity to appoint a conservative justice to tilt the balance of the court, with a 6-3 conservative majority.

RBG was a liberal justice appointed by former president Bill Clinton in 1993. She was admired by many.

Justice Elena Kagan said in 2014 that Justice Ginsburg is an idol for younger generations. Kagan said she can take credit for making the law of this country work for women and in doing so she made possible Kagan’s own career as a female Supreme Court justice.

The world has lost Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She will always be revered and remembered.
