“Sound of Metal” and “Feeling Through” Receive Oscar Nominations

Today the Oscars announced its nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25. Two films that had deaf or DeafBlind actors and storylines were nominated: “Sound of Metal” and “Feeling Through.”

“Sound of Metal” received six nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (Riz Ahmed, who portrayed a drummer who suddenly lost his hearing), Best Supporting Actor (Paul Raci, who portrayed a late-deafened man), Original Screenplay, Editing, and Sound.

There is controversy with the casting for the film’s two lead roles because they are hearing men who act like deaf characters. I’ve covered the controversy in a news video last week. However, the film features an impressive lineup of deaf actors, which includes Lauren Ridloff, Shaheem Sanchez, Jason Lee Stone, Chelsea Lee, and several others.

“Sound of Metal”’ is available to watch on Amazon.

The second film, “Feeling Through,” which features a DeafBlind actor named Robert Tarango, received a nomination for Live-Action Short. Marlee Matlin and Jack Jason are among the executive producers. The 18-minute film is about a young homeless man in New York City who happens to meet a DeafBlind man who needed help with getting on a city bus. You can watch the film on YouTube. There is also a 25-minute behind-the-scenes documentary that describes the story behind the film.

Again, the awards will be given out on April 25th.
