Sorenson acquires two companies on AI-driven automated sign language translation

Sorenson announced in a press release that it acquired two companies to “accelerate company innovation in AI-driven automated sign language translation.” The two companies are OmniBridge and Hand Talk.

The CEO of Sorenson, Paget L. Alves, said OmniBridge is an “AI-driven sign language translation technology that enables bi-directional, real-time conversations between people who use ASL and those who speak English.” Alves said Hand Talk uses AI and ML to generate automated sign language translations through digital avatars.

Alves said he wants to “understand how to complement the (human) interpreter’s role in serving the Deaf community” and is “committed to the essential role of human interpretation and will continue to invest in (their) interpreters.”

So, this is a significant announcement from Sorenson, the largest VRS provider in the U.S. The press release did not disclose financial terms or specific plans on when Sorenson will implement AI technology in its products and/or services. This is something to stay tuned about.
