2,500 killed in Morocco earthquake

About 2,500 people were killed by a strong earthquake in Morocco on Friday night. The quake was 6.8 magnitude and it destroyed many villages near the Atlas Mountains. In a major city, Marrakech, many people slept outside because they were afraid to go back to their homes.

First responders are searching through rubble to try and find survivors.

CNN said this quake is Morocco’s deadliest since 1960 when an earthquake killed over 12,000 people.

Coco Gauff wins U.S. Open

On Saturday, American Coco Gauff won the U.S. Open and her first Grand Slam championship.

She is 19 years old and is the youngest American to win the U.S. Open since Serena Williams did it in 1999 when she was 17.

Gauff said it was an honor to have her name listed on the same trophy as Serena and Venus Williams, who won the tournament a combined eight times. Gauff said the Williams sisters allowed her to believe in this dream growing up.

In separate news, Novak Djokovic won the men’s singles championship for his 24th Grand Slam trophy.

Escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante still at large

Law enforcement are still searching for Danelo Cavalcante, the murderer who escaped from a prison near Philadelphia almost two weeks ago.

The latest is that Cavalcante stole a van from a business in West Chester and drove it until it ran out of gas. He also approached a former coworker’s home to try and seek help. A doorbell camera showed that he is clean-shaved and is wearing a green hoodie.

There are now about 600 people involved in the manhunt.

Updates on Hurricane Lee

Hurricane Lee is currently a Category 3 storm and is spinning north of Puerto Rico. Weather.com said Lee will make a northward turn during the middle part of the week and continue tracking northwards.

It is expected to weaken because of colder waters, but the hurricane may affect the East Coast this week by causing dangerous high surf, rip currents and coastal flooding.

The center of the storm may hit North America anywhere from the New England area to Canada’s Atlantic provinces this weekend.

Spain soccer president resigns after unwanted kiss

The president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, said he would resign after he was accused of sexual assault by Jenni Hermoso after he kissed her without her consent during a ceremony for Spain’s World Cup victory.

Rubiales had previously refused to resign, saying the kiss was nothing, that it was similar to a kiss he would give to his daughter. But Hermoso said she felt disrespected and was put in a vulnerable position.

A prosecutor’s office in Spain said it is seeking to charge Rubiales with sexual assault and coercion.

Rubiales said he decided to resign because of the impact the controversy had on other people In his life.
