Search for Hawari now a recovery mission

In tragic news, the search for the missing deaf mountaineer Muhammad Hawari Hashim has shifted into a recovery mission, meaning that crews presume that he is deceased and are now focused on trying to find his body.

Azim Afif Ishak, who is the leader of the Malaysian Everest 2023 team that Hawari was in, posted an update on Instagram on Wednesday. He said, “…we understand that finding (Hawari) alive is highly unlikely at this point, we want to assure you that our team is dedicated to doing everything possible to locate him. Our primary goal is to bring some peace to his grieving family during this difficult time.”

Azim posted a video tribute on his Instagram Stories of Hawari climbing the mountain with poetic sentences. Here it is.

Ngaa Tenji Sherpa, who has been searching for Hawari, posted on his Instagram an image of him with three others with the caption, “With Alpha Team Dead body recovery mission.”

The Malaysian Everest 2023 team manager said in an official statement that the search and rescue mission ended on June 6.

Hawari summited Mt. Everest on May 18, which is three weeks ago. According to news reports, he went missing the day after he descended to Camp 4, the highest camp on the mountain. At that time, he was left alone because a sherpa that accompanied him had to rush back to the summit to rescue another climber. It is unknown what exactly happened to Hawari. He may have fallen down a steep slope or into a crevasse.

Azim said they are planning to visit a specific area where they hope Hawari’s body is located. Hawari was 33 years old. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Hawari frequently posted on his Instagram page. Two of his last posts are these pictures from May 13 and 11. I want to show you two short video clips of Hawari signing.

It is a tragic ending for him, but Hawari achieved something that only a few people in the world have ever done — summit Everest.
