Scott & Shayna reach Everest summit

American Deaf mountaineers Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger posted on their social media platforms that they made it to the summit of Mt. Everest at 6:00 a.m. local time today. They said, “It was freezing cold and super windy at the summit.” They said they couldn’t immediately post pictures because their phones wouldn’t work but their cameraman took pictures and videos of them at the summit and that they would share when they get back to base camp.

Shayna is, as far as we know, the first Deaf woman to reach the summit. Congratulations to Scott and Shayna for achieving what they set out to do and for making history! You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram at Scott & Shayna.

Deaf Malaysian climber missing

In separate news, many are concerned about a 33-year-old deaf Malaysian mountaineer who reached the summit of Everest on Thursday because he is now missing. His name is Muhammad Hawari Bin Hashim. A news report from Explorersweb.com explained that Hawari was with a Sherpa on their way back to Camp 4, the highest camp near the peak, when the Sherpa had to go back to the summit to help another climber who became sick. That other climber died. When Hawari’s team — run by a company called Pioneer Adventure — got back to Camp 4, they realized that Hawari was missing. The company said they sent Sherpas to every camp to look for him.

At least nine people have died during this season on Everest, so it is very dangerous up there. We are hopeful that Hawari will be found safe and that Scott and Shayna will have a safe descent back to base camp.
