Russian cadet allegedly killed deaf woman after thinking hearing aid was spying device
I read international news reports that said a Russian military cadet was arrested for allegedly murdering a 41-year-old deaf woman after mistaking her hearing aid for a spying device.
The suspect’s name is Nikolay Tikhonov (28). He met the deaf victim, identified as only Nadezhda, in a St. Petersburg nightclub last weekend, where they communicated by writing notes. Nikolay thought it was some kind of game. He invited her to go to his apartment, where the woman saw that Nikolay had a military uniform and she asked questions about his military service. Nikolay noticed that the woman had a device in her ear that made sounds and thought it was some kind of a recording device. Nikolay somehow “concluded that Nadezhda was a ‘Ukrainian spy.’” Nikolay then attacked the woman and called emergency services to say that he invited a “Ukrainian or god knows who” and would kill her. Nadezhda passed away from injuries sustained in the attack and emergency crews weren’t able to save her. The device she was wearing was a hearing aid. Reports said Nikolay was intoxicated at the time.
Nikolay is now in a pretrial detention in military court on an accusation of murder.
Nadezhda’s stepfather said she worked in sewing factories but was recently laid off. The stepfather said she went to bars because she wanted to find a man.
It’s a very tragic story and it shows how tensions from the Russia-Ukraine war may have caused paranoid thoughts that ultimately caused a deaf woman to lose her life from a brutal act of violence.
