Deaf player in “Squid Games: The Challenge”
The second news brief is about a Deaf person as one of the players on a competitive reality TV show on Netflix called “Squid Game: The Challenge.” Jackie Gonzalez from Alamo City, Texas is player 393 out of the 456 players wanting to win $4.96 million dollars. This reality TV show is based on a South Korean drama series called “Squid Game” which was released in 2021. “Squid Games: The Challenge” reality TV show consists of many challenges (similar to the drama series) that the players have to face and if they fail the challenge, they will get eliminated immediately. I personally have watched the series and if you are curious to know when more screen time is on Jackie, it starts with episode 6 and on. Melissa Yingst, host of Melmira, interviewed Jackie about her experience with this competition as a Deaf person. Jackie mentioned she had a good experience, and the producers were accommodating. She also mentioned that she wanted to represent the Deaf community and show that deafness is on a spectrum. You can check out the full interview with Melissa and Jackie with the link in the transcript. If you have a Netflix account, this show is available for you to watch.
