Recap of Daniel Durant’s DWTS Competition: Week 7

“Dancing with the Stars” Season 31 kicked off its first week on September 19th and now it is the 7th week. Deaf actor Daniel Durant from the Oscar-winning movie CODA, is one of the contestants. This is a recap of last night’s performance. The theme was “Halloween” and the song choice was “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eilish.

Daniel and his partner Britt Stewart had to do the Paso Doble type of dance. Daniel said he wanted the dance theme to be related to diving into an apocalyptic zombie video game. Britt mentioned that the Paso Doble is a challenging dance because it is very quick and both of them have to be quick on their feet. It seems that Daniel got sick recently and had to miss some rehearsal time so when he returned, it was a bit stressful for Daniel because of the pressure of learning the dance in a short time frame. He mentioned that he was nervous and frustrated. He said that he has to figure this out and he said if the dance routine gets messed up, there is a possibility of elimination, which he doesn’t want to happen.

For the performance, Daniel and Britt dressed like video game characters in a post-apocalyptic world with “combat” type clothes. The background was a photo of an abandoned city with some destroyed buildings. While Daniel and Britt danced, there were some extra dancers that came on stage as zombies “chasing” after these two.

The dance routine was very quick. You could see Daniel and Britt moving fast across the floor. There were a lot of moves that required Daniel to spin Britt around and lift her in the air.

At the end of the dance routine, Daniel “fought” off the zombies and the screen in the background said, “Game Over, New High Score!” The judges applauded him for being quick on his feet, but a few of them did mention to Daniel that he missed some steps and will need to make sure that doesn’t happen again. They applauded him for getting back on track after missing the steps.

The overall score from the judges was 34. You could see some sense of relief from Daniel with the total score. When all of the dancing couples performed their routine, there was a group dance challenge so two teams were split up: Team Wicked and Team Scream. Daniel was part of the Team Scream. They had to choreograph a dance together. Daniel mentioned that he liked doing that challenge because he got to see how other people worked with their partner. There was one part where Team Scream signed “scream” together. After the challenge, the judges gave Team Scream a higher score than Team Wicked. That team score was added up to each dancing couple for their individual scores, giving each individual higher scores.

At the very end of the elimination of a dancing couple after calculating the audience’s votes and judges’ votes, Jordin Sparks and Brandon Armstrong were the couples that got eliminated. Daniel and Britt were the first dancing couple to be announced that they were “safe” from elimination. Both of them were so happy and screamed together and jumped up and down.
