Recap of Daniel Durant’s DWTS Competition: Week 5, Part 2
Daniel Durant, a Deaf actor from the Oscar-winning movie CODA, is one of the contestants on the TV show, Dancing with the Stars this season. We have been giving weekly recaps of Daniel’s progress. Yesterday, I gave Daniel’s week 5 recap on Monday night’s performance. I mentioned that the next round would be next week. What I did not realize was that this week actually had a 2-night special meaning there was a performance on Monday night and also Tuesday night (last night). So, this is a recap of Daniel’s 2nd performance last night for week 5. The theme was “Prom Night.” Daniel and his partner Britt Stewart did Cha Cha to “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake featuring Timbaland.

During rehearsal time, Daniel mentioned having a good time dancing at prom at his former school Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. He recalled that his prom would have huge speakers and he would be able to feel the music beat. There was a moment when Daniel “asked” Britt to be his prom date and Britt, of course, said yes. Daniel said that Britt is the best prom date ever and “sorry ladies.”

Daniel and Britt both wore pink outfits. In the beginning, Daniel stood in a circle with many lights beaming around then just as soon as the music started, Daniel began dancing then Britt joined him. The both of them moved quickly on the floor, dancing to the beats.

The judges gave their feedback. They mentioned that it was a fun dance to watch and Daniel clearly had fun with it, but some of his footwork was not “clean.” He needed to work on some of his steps, but the judges still applauded him for doing a good job with the Cha Cha. The total score for them was 32.

For this two-night special, eliminations were supposed to happen on both nights, but because on Monday night, Selma Blair, one of the contestants, had to leave the show due to health reasons, basically she “eliminated herself.” So last night was the “normal” process of elimination by calculating the total votes from the judges and from the audience/viewers votes. At the end of the show, a dancing couple was eliminated: Joseph Baena and partner Daniella Karagach. So, this means Daniel and Britt are still in the competition. We will give a recap next week.
