NCAA to honor Gallaudet star Ronda Jo Miller; All-deaf basketball officiating crew in NM

Here are two Deaf News briefs related to sports.

NCAA to honor Gallaudet star Ronda Jo Miller

The first is an announcement from the NCAA that it would be honoring former Deaf basketball and volleyball star at Gallaudet University, Ronda Jo Miller, as one of six recipients of the Silver Anniversary Award during their upcoming convention. The awards are given to recipients on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their collegiate athletic careers. The NCAA said Miller is “considered the most dominant student-athlete in Gallaudet history” and led Gallaudet to two NCAA tournament appearances in each sport. She was also the first deaf player to try out for the WNBA. There is a nice video of Miller that shows her highlights on a NCAA website.

All-deaf basketball officiating crew in NM

The second news comes from the New Mexico School for the Deaf. They said on December 4, history was made when an entirely Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing officiating crew worked a varsity basketball game. The three-person crew are all NMSD alumni: John Hooper, Robert Huizar, and Ronnie Milliorn. They officiated a game between Monte del Sol and NMSD.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today. Congratulations to Miller and the three deaf referees in New Mexico.
