Here are two Deaf News Briefs.

Na’vi Sign Language in “Avatar” sequel

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” the sequel to “Avatar,” will be released today. There will be some alien sign language in it that was created by CJ Jones. The language is called Na’vi Sign Language.

There is a series of videos on Avatar’s official YouTube account with CJ Jones. There are translations for phrases such as “Swim together with us,” “Friends,” or “I’m Sorry.” Here is one sample.

IGN released a clip of an interview with CJ Jones at the red carpet premiere in Hollywood on Monday. CJ Jones said when he created Na’vi Sign Language, he wanted it to not match with any signed languages out there. He said he used gestures and body language, and thought of how the Na’vi would communicate underwater.

So if you are planning to watch the sequel of Avatar, be sure to look out for instances of Na’vi Sign Language!

In separate but related news, another deaf person named Oliver Ferguson, who is from New Zealand, said he was a part of the Avatar team. He worked in the Visual FX department. He said he is proud to be one of two Deaf people who worked on this film along with CJ Jones.
