NAD, law firm sues North LV Police Department on behalf of Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth

FOX 5 News in Las Vegas reported that the NAD is working with the McLetchie Law Group to file a lawsuit against the North Las Vegas Police Department on behalf of a Black and Deaf mother, Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth, who was seen in viral videos of an April incident in which she was detained by several police officers who then proceeded to use her 11-year-old twin daughters as interpreters.

NAD CEO Howard Rosenblum announced on NAD.org that the complaint was filed on Tuesday. Rosenblum said in a vlog that Hollingsworth did not commit any kind of traffic violation and she was simply parked, sitting in her car with her children, when officers surrounded her and spoke at her behind masks before handcuffing her.

Rosenblum said they are suing because the NLVPD “handled the situation terribly,” and committed an illegal act in using her daughters as interpreters. He is hoping the lawsuit will set a precedent that police cannot force family members to become interpreters.

Hollingsworth told Fox 5 News that she hopes the lawsuit stops the (NLVPD) from doing this to anyone else ever again.

NAD is asking a “federal judge to order the NLVPD to cease unlawful and discriminatory practices” and is seeking damages for the harm that Hollingsworth and her daughters experienced. The complaint said the NLVPD violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Constitution.

“The Daily Moth” did an interview with Hollingsworth in April. She said in the interview that she decided to go on Facebook Live because she felt funny about how the officers were acting around her and that she believes that she saved her life by filming herself and capturing the incident.
