Mozzeria D.C. to close at end of 2024
Mozzeria D.C. announced on social media on Friday that it would close its restaurant on the H St. on December 31, 2024.
[Video clip showing Mozzeria CEO R.M. Horrell’s announcement. They are signing, “On December 31st, 2024, Mozzeria will close its DC location. This decision was not made lightly, and it comes with deep gratitude and love for the community that has supported us along the way. In recent months, there has been a significant shift in the D.C. business landscape, which has made it unsustainable to remain open at this location.”]
In messages to “The Daily Moth,” Horrell said it is just the Washington D.C. location that is closing but their operations in San Francisco, which consists of two food trucks, are still going strong.
Horrell said many restaurants in the D.C. area had to close in the past few months and. They said while they are incredibly sad to make this decision, they have plans for other, more economically viable locations.
Many people commented with suggestions on a new restaurant location, such as on the Gallaudet campus or in Rochester, New York. Horrell said there are a lot of things to consider, such as the cost of commercial real estate, availability of staff, materials and ingredients, an active customer base, and a steady economy. Horrell said they hope to have the Mozzeria brand endure for many more years to come.
Thank you, Horrell, for providing comments.
Mozzeria’s original founders were Melody and Russ Stein, who opened a restaurant in San Francisco in 2011. It became Deaf landmark of sorts. In 2017, Mozzeria partnered with Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD)’s Social Venture Fund and they had hopes of expanding nationwide. In 2020, Mozzeria’s San Francisco location closed during the pandemic and the D.C. location opened.
The D.C. Mozzeria’s closure will be a blow to what was a once-emerging Deaf footprint in the H St. corridor with the other location the signing Starbucks.
