Monday, September 13 top stories

It is Monday, September 13. Here are today’s top stories.

A news report from Houston said a woman shot and killed a suspected “peeping Tom” on Friday night.

Houston Police said the woman was in her bedroom at 11 p.m. when she saw a strange man looking into her bedroom window. The woman felt she was in danger, retrieved her rifle, and fired several shots through the wall. Police said one of the bullets hit the suspect in the torso and that he died at the scene a short distance away from the window. Police said they are investigating the shooting and have not decided if any charges will be filed.

The U.S. Capitol Police said they arrested a man who had various illegal weapons in his vehicle early Monday morning.

Officers on patrol noticed a Dodge Dakota with deer antlers installed on the front of it driving near the Democratic National Committee headquarters at midnight. This location is about half a mile south of the U.S. Capitol.

The truck did not have a license plate, but there was a picture of an American flag in the license holder area.

The truck had a swastika painted on one of the side-view mirrors. There were various white supremacist symbols around the truck. The word, “Confederate” was painted in the driver’s dash area.

Officers said when they pulled the truck over, they identified the driver as a 44-year-old Donald Craighead of Oceanside, California. When officers saw that the driver had a bayonet and machete, he was arrested because these types of weapons are illegal in D.C.

It is a tense time in the Capitol Hill area because there will be a right-wing rally on Saturday to demand justice for those charged with breaking an array of laws during the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The event is called “Justice for J6.” CBS News said the protest is expected to draw about 300 to 500 people and may include members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

Today the U.S. Capitol Police announced that fencing will go back up around the Capitol ahead of the rally on Saturday, and then if everything goes well the fence will go down very soon after.

The fencing was installed in January because of security concerns surrounding Capitol riots and the Biden inauguration.

We remember that less than a month ago, a man from North Carolina drove up his pick-up truck near the U.S. Capitol and went LIVE on social media with claims of having a bomb. He eventually surrendered to U.S. Capitol Police and faces 10 years to life in prison for his bomb threats.

On Sunday, Maia Chaka became the first Black woman to officiate an NFL game. CNN said she was a line judge during the game between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets.

Chaka said in a statement that she is honored and privileged to be chosen to represent women and women of color in the most popular sport in America. Chaka is the third on-field female official in the NFL and used to referee in the NCAA.

There is a tropical storm named Nicholas that is churning in the Gulf of Mexico and forecast to hit the southern Texas coast beginning this afternoon and move parallel to the coast for the next two days. Weather forecasters say the Houston area and nearby areas may get anywhere from 8 inches to two feet of rain.

Nicholas currently has 60 mph winds. People in Louisiana are concerned about another round of bad weather as many are still without power and recovering from Hurricane Ida.

There will be an election in California on Tuesday on whether voters want to recall and replace Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Tuesday is the deadline for both mail-in and in-person voting. Republicans in California led the effort to push Newsom. They say Newsom has done a terrible job of leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and dealing with the homelessness and water crises.

News analysts say it is doubtful that Newsom will be recalled, but if he is voted out, the likely replacement would be Republican candidate Larry Elder.

The last time California had a gubernatorial recall election, Gray Davis was replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
