Monday, May 30 top stories

It is Monday, May 30. I’m back in the studio. Thank you to Renca Dunn for covering top stories last week. Here are today’s top stories.

Biden visits Uvalde; DOJ to review police response

President Biden visited Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas to show support for the community grieving the 19 children and two teachers who were gunned down last week.

The Justice Department said it would review the Uvalde law enforcement’s response to the shooting because it took about an hour for cops to breach a classroom door and confront the shooter despite there being children inside in the classroom calling 911 for help and many officers just a few feet away.

It was the second time in two weeks that Biden visited a city to support those grieving from a mass shooting as before Uvalde, Biden visited Buffalo, New York where 10 people in a supermarket were killed in a racist attack.

There are many calls for Congress to pass new gun legislation as in both the Uvalde and Buffalo shootings, the gunmen were 18-year-old men with apparent mental health issues and were able to easily and legally purchase powerful military-style rifles. But it seems like it’ll be another deadlock in Congress as Republican leaders have shown they do not want to support legislation that would put in stricter checks for gun buyers.

Glass protecting Mona Lisa painting smeared with cake

The glass protecting the Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre Museum in Paris was smeared with cake by a male protester who posed as a woman in a wheelchair on Sunday. After the protester smeared the cake, he threw roses around him before security tackled him. A video shows museum staffers wiping down the glass. The painting was untouched, only the glass was smeared. The protester said he wanted to call attention to the Earth because people are destroying the Earth.

The Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation trial concluded its testimony and arguments phase on Friday in a courtroom in Virginia.
