Monday, May 3 top stories

Hello, it is Monday, May 3. Hope your weekend was good. Here are today’s top stories.

The New York Times reported that there is widespread consensus among scientists and public health experts that the U.S. may never reach “herd immunity” against the coronavirus. The three main reasons why: vaccinations are not proceeding fast enough, the virus is changing with new variants spreading quickly, and millions are hesitant against getting vaccinated.

You can see in this graphic which parts of the country are most likely to get the vaccinations according to a survey conducted by the federal government. The darker the purple color in regions, the more likely it is that adults will get the vaccine.

Some people are just not rushing to get a vaccine, some want to wait and see, and some are explicit that they will not get it.

Scientists say the coronavirus is likely to become a manageable threat that will continue to circulate in the U.S. for years to come, still causing hospitalizations and deaths, but in much smaller numbers.

In San Diego, a suspected smuggling boat filled with people capsized near the Cabrillo National Monument in rough waters. First responders found a debris field with splintered wood, personal items, and people struggling to stay afloat in the sea. Four people died and almost 30 people were hospitalized with hypothermia or other injuries.

A suspected smuggler was taken in custody. USA Today said typically the people being trafficked are sent home as the smuggler goes through the process of facing federal charges.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order to end all local Covid-19 related restrictions and a bill to limit governments’ ability to shut down schools and businesses.

The governor said the restrictions are not needed because vaccines are effective and have been administered to much of the state’s elderly population. Axios reported that 37% of Florida’s population has been fully vaccinated.

The mayor of St. Petersburg said Gov. DeSantis and the Florida legislature should be thanking local leaders because they are the ones who took action to save lives.

CBS News said over the next few weeks along the East Coast and Midwest, there will be billions of cicadas that will emerge from the ground, shed their skins, and partake in a month-long mating ritual. They will climb trees and sing mating songs at 100 decibels, which is equivalent with a jackhammer. This group of cicadas is known as Brood X and they emerge from the soil every 17 years when the soil is 64 degrees. The bugs do not bite, sting, or pose any harm to humans or gardens. The cicadas’ goal is to find a mate and lay eggs before they die in three or four weeks. So, if you see a large insect with red eyes, that’s a Brood X cicada. The last time these insects emerged all over the U.S. was in 2004, and after this year, the next time they’ll emerge is 2038.

A gunman opened fire inside of a restaurant at the Oneida Casino near Green Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday evening, killing two people and seriously wounding a third person. Witnesses said they heard 20 to 30 gunshots. Police officers shot and killed the gunman.

Today police in Brown County said the gunman was a worker who was fired from the restaurant. They said he shot and killed two employees, both males in their 30’s, at close range using a 9mm handguns, and then shot at a third restaurant employee outside.

Verizon said it will sell Yahoo and AOL for $5 billion to a private equity firm called Apollo Global Management. News analysts say it means Verizon is giving up on its media business ambitions after being unable to overtake Google and Facebook’s businesses in digital advertising.

Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), who is one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress, tweeted that “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE…”

Cheney tweeted this because former president Donald Trump issued a statement on Monday morning saying Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election is “the big lie.”

Cheney has been someone who is willing to stand up to Trump — she voted to impeach Trump in January for inciting an insurrection at the Capitol.

The statement by Trump shows that he is nowhere near accepting that he lost the 2020 election despite Supreme Court decisions that threw out lawsuits seeking to overturn the election.
