It is Monday, March 14. Here are today’s top stories.
Ukraine war updates
On Sunday, there was a Russian missile strike that hit a military base in western Ukraine which is about 12 miles away from the border with Poland. The strike killed at least 35 people and injured over 130. It is one of the deadliest missile strikes so far. Most of Russia’s bombings have targeted the eastern and southern parts of the country, and now western areas are being hit. This is a new and dangerous phase of the war because the strikes are getting real close to NATO borders. People in Poland said they could hear the bombs.
Ukrainian President Zelensky warned that if NATO does not close the Ukrainian sky, it is “only a matter of time before Russian missiles fall on your territory.”
In a sad news update from the maternity ward that was hit by a large bomb in Mariupol last week, a mother and her baby died from the explosion. The mother was seen on photos and videos being carried away on a makeshift stretcher. The mother had a crushed pelvis and the baby was delivered via Cesarean section but it did not show signs of life. The mother died at about the same time. There are about 400,000 people who are trapped in Mariupol by Russian troops with little access to water and food and no electricity or heat.
An American journalist, Brent Renaud, was killed while trying to cover the war in Ukraine in an area near Kyiv. Renaud was 50. His reporting partner, Juan Arredondo, said they were filming civilians evacuating and when they drove in a car and went past a checkpoint, they were shot at. Renaud was shot in the neck while Arredondo was hit in the thigh and survived.
News reports said sources from U.S. intelligence told them that Russia has asked China for military and economic support. A Chinese spokesperson said they have never heard of this. Today officials from the U.S. and Chinese government will meet in Rome.
Zelensky will give a virtual speech before the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, but it will be in a closed-door session. Zelensky has been asking for U.S. aerial military support.
Kyiv is still being hit by Russian shelling. Today an apartment was hit and caught on fire. At least two people were killed. Zelensky visited a hospital in the Kyiv area to meet with injured Ukrainian troops.
China orders 50 million in Covid-19 lockdowns
China has ordered about 50 million people to go into lockdown in the Jilin province and two large cities, Shenzhen and Dongguan. China’s government has a goal of having zero cases of Covid and went into lockdown when they had about 1,400 new cases on Monday, which is four times the amount they had a week prior. ABC News said China has shown that it is not willing to pivot to “living with the virus.” The lockdowns can last at least seven days and consist of three rounds of testing.

Suspect wanted for shooting homeless men in NYC and DC
The mayors of New York City and Washington D.C. said their law enforcement are working together to look for a suspect who shot at least five homeless men in both cities, killing at least two. The first shooting happened on March 3 in D.C. The second shooting happened five days later near the first scene in D.C. The third shooting happened the day after when they saw a tent on fire with a victim inside who had stab and gunshot wounds. On March 12 in New York City, police responded to two separate shooting incidents of homeless men several hours apart, one in the morning and one in the evening. All the shootings are blamed on this same person. There is a reward of up to $55,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Obama says he tested positive for Covid-19
Former president Barack Obama said on Sunday that he tested positive for Covid-19. He said he had a scratchy throat for a couple of days but is feeling fine. His wife Michelle tested negative. Both are fully vaccinated and received booster shots.
Tom Brady says he’s unretiring
NFL quarterback Tom Brady announced on social media last night that he would come out of retirement to play in his 23rd season in Tampa. It was a shock to many because he announced that he was retiring after the end of the 2021 season and it seemed to be for good. Brady said, “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands” and that he has unfinished business. He is 44 and will be 45 when the 2022 NFL season starts.
