Monday, June 28 top stories

Hello! It is Monday, June 28. Hope your weekend was good. Here are today’s top stories.

In Surfside, Florida, search crews are still trying to find survivors in the rubble of a condo building that collapsed on Thursday. The death toll is now at 10 people, and there are still 151 people missing.

Two of the dead were an elderly married couple who were Cuban emigres who were about to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary and had dinner with their son a few hours before the condo collapse.

Crews said they still have hope of finding survivors and are working in 12-hour shifts. It is very dangerous as one crew member fell 25 feet down.

Israel and Mexico have sent crews to support the search.

CNN explained that to understand what caused the collapse, investigators will need to look at the columns on the ground floor to find clues. There was a 2018 report that said there was damage and corrosion in several places on the condo, which was built in 1981.

Local officials said they will be transparent with making records of past building inspections public.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to continue wearing masks out of concerns with the Delta variant that is extremely contagious. WHO said people still need to protect themselves. The Pfizer vaccine is 90% effective against the Delta strain, so it’s not guaranteed to protect you.

In the U.S., Covid-19 cases have declined sharply, but there are still about 12,000 new cases a day. The Biden administration and the CDC are encouraging people to get vaccinated, but they haven’t changed their previous announcement that those fully vaccinated can safely go out without masks both indoors and outdoors.

On Saturday during the Tour de France, a spectator held a large cardboard sign right by a road, causing a bicyclist to crash into the sign and fall, which led to a chain reaction of crashes. The fan is unidentified and is said to have fled the country. News reports say the woman may be German. Officials with the Tour de France want to sue the spectator.

The Pacific Northwest is going through a record heat wave that is blamed on a “heat dome,” which is an unusual weather pattern, and the effects of climate change. It was 112 degrees F in Portland, Oregon on Sunday, which is an all-time record. In British Columbia, it was 116 degrees F (or 45 degrees Celsius) on Sunday, which is an all-time record for Canada.

There are concerns for vulnerable people in the region because many buildings do not have air conditioning since it is usually cool. There are “cooling shelters” set up at convention centers.

1.10 Two Black adults killed in apparent hate crime

In the Boston area on Saturday, police said a 28-year-old man who had white supremacist views shot and killed two Black adults, and they are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

The suspect, Nathan Allen, is said to have stolen a large truck and crashed it into a building in Winthrop. He then got out and walked down the street and shot and killed Ramona Cooper (60), an Air Force veteran, and then shot and killed David Green (58), who was a retired Massachusetts State Trooper.

Police officers shot and killed Allen. Police said they believe it is a hate crime because after Allen crashed his truck, he walked past several people who were not Black and did not harm them. Police said Allen was married, had a Ph.D., and no criminal history, but found that he wrote hateful things about the superiority of the white race and drew swastikas.

There was a solemn procession to honor Cooper and Green.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
