Monday, July 27 top news briefs

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth. It is Monday, July 27. Hope your weekend was good. Here are top news briefs.

Vaccine study with 30,000 volunteers

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Moderna, a drug company, have started a Covid-19 vaccine study that will involve 30,000 volunteers. The volunteers will either get a real vaccine or a placebo shot — they will not know which one they get. Scientists will track the volunteers to see whether they become infected and how serious their symptoms are. AP News said that for every month into the fall, there will be a new vaccine test with another group of 30,000 volunteers.

In August it will be the Oxford University vaccine, then in September it’ll be a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and in October it’ll be a Novavax vaccine. Each month will have a new group of 30,000 volunteers. The hope is that in a few months, we’ll know which vaccines are effective in preventing the coronavirus or reducing its symptoms. Until then, we’re encouraged to continue to socially distance and wear face masks.

Hurricanes Douglas & Hanna

Hurricane Douglas narrowly missed making landfall on Hawaii today. The hurricane curved north of the islands and only caused wind, rain, and high surf.

Hurricane Hanna made landfall on the Texas’ Gulf Coast’s Padre Island on Sunday as a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds. It brought heavy rains, severe flooding in some areas, and caused 200,000 people to be without power.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo, once feared, became a Tropical Depression and is likely to continue to become smaller and break apart along the coast of Venezuela.

Walmart shoppers with Nazi mask

A couple wore face masks with a Nazi swastika symbols on it while shopping in a Walmart in Marshall, Minnesota.

Another shopper and her partner filmed them while confronting them. They said you can’t be an American and wear that mask and that we had a war about this.

The Nazi-wearing couple said they were not Nazis but wore it to warn that if you voted for Biden, we would live in a socialist state and that it would be like living in Nazi Germany.

News reports said police went to the Walmart and gave the couple a “trespass notices.” Walmart said the couple is banned from all Walmart stores for a year.

McDonalds to require masks

McDonalds announced they would require all customers to wear a face mask starting on August 1 if they go inside. McDonalds said they will train their staff on how to de-escalate situations — on how to deal with angry (and hungry) customers who might refuse to wear a mask.

Trump’s NSA adviser infected with Covid-19

President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Robert C. O’Brien, has tested positive for the coronavirus. The White House said he has mild symptoms and is working off-site and that there is no risk of exposure to Trump.

MLB games postponed due to outbreaks of Covid-19

The MLB team Miami Marlins said they are postponing their game against the Baltimore Orioles because at least 14 players and coaches tested positive for Covid-19. The Marlins recently played several games against the Philadelphia Phillies, and now the Phillies’ home game against the New York Yankees is postponed. The infections have marred MLB’s hopeful start last week and there are serious concerns about other MLB teams and its future.

John Lewis honored

John Lewis, who recently passed away, was honored in a solemn procession in which his casket was placed on a two-horse wagon that went across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday. 55 years ago Lewis was beaten by Alabama state troopers when he went across the bridge to fight for voting rights for African-Americans. But yesterday, Alabama state troopers saluted him. Lewis’ body will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. His funeral and burial will take place in Atlanta on Thursday.

Updates with antiracist protests

In Louisville, Kentucky, a large group of Black protesters armed with rifles marched to demand justice for Breonna Taylor. They have called themselves the NFAC. There was a group of counter-protesters in a group called the “Three Percenters” who were also armed, but they were separated by police. There was no violence, but someone from the NFAC side accidentally shot their weapon and injured three people.

In Austin, Texas, a 28-year-old protester named Garrett Foster was shot and killed by a man who was driving in a vehicle. News reports said both the protester and the driver were armed. Apparently the vehicle drove in a way that threatened protesters who were demonstrating on a street, so Foster confronted the driver while holding a rifle, and the driver rolled down his window and shot at the protester, who died in a hospital. So far there have been no charges.

The protests in Portland, Oregon has continued for a 60th straight night. News reports say 1,000 protesters congregated around the federal courthouse last night. Some launched fireworks and federal agents fired tear gas back. The tensions are still very high.

There were fresh protests in Seattle, Los Angeles, Oakland, and other cities.
