It is Monday, January 30. Here are today’s top stories.
Videos of Tyre Nichols’ death
On Friday night, Memphis police released footage showing how multiple officers assaulted Tyre Nichols on January 7. His injuries were so severe that he died three days later in a hospital.
Last week five Memphis police officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder and additional related charges.
The police beating started after Nichols tried to run away from officers after they grabbed at him as he was sitting in his car during a traffic stop. Once the officers caught him, they used pepper spray on him, hit him with batons, and even held him up as officers punched him in the face. Nichols was heard yelling “Mom!” at one point.
Nichols’ attorney Ben Crump, who is a well-known civil rights attorney, said an independent autopsy found that Nicholas suffered from extensive bleeding.
The officers were a part of the “SCORPION” unit that was focused on reducing crime in specific areas. That unit is now disbanded.
Today a sixth officer, Preston Hemphill, was fired. He was seen in the videos pulling Nichols from his car during the traffic stop and hitting him on the ground with a Taser. When Nichols ran away, he shouted that he hoped other officers would “stomp” him.
Memphis police said they may file more charges and that their investigation is ongoing.
Paul Pelosi attack video
On Friday, a judge in San Francisco ordered the release of videos showing the home invasion and attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This happened in October.
The suspect, David DePape, is seen outside of the Pelosi home swinging a hammer at a glass door before breaking it and entering the house. There are no videos of the interior of the home, but based on previous news reports, DePape woke up Paul sleeping and asked, “Where’s Nancy?”
A police body camera video of an officer responding to a 911 call shows the officer knocking on the front door. The door opened to reveal DePape and Paul holding a hammer. The officer orders DePape to drop the hammer, but he says, “nope” before pulling away the hammer and taking a hard swing at Paul. The officers quickly swarm on DePape and Paul is seen lying on the floor.
He was hospitalized with a skull fracture and seems to be making a good recovery so far after surgery.
DePape has been charged with attempted murder and has pleaded not guilty. He said in a jailhouse interview on Friday that he wish he had been more prepared for the attack. He will have a court appearance in about a month to set a date for his trial.

The man who is charged with seven murder counts in the Half Moon Bay mass shooting said he became angry with his supervisor over a $100 bill to repair a damaged forklift.

Last Monday, he told his supervisor his side of the story but the supervisor said Zhao had to pay. Zhao then shot the supervisor and the co-worker before going on a shooting rampage at the farm and at a second farm.
Suicide bombing kills 44 in Pakistan
Today in Peshawar, Pakistan, there was a suicide bombing at a mosque that killed at least 44 people and wounded over 100. There were over 300 people inside the mosque when the bomb exploded and the roof collapsed. There were many police officers because the mosque was in an area where a regional police office is located. It is considered a targeted attack against the country’s police.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing. News reports said the group recently broke off peace talks with the country’s government and has ramped up attacks since November.
Pakistan’s prime minister condemned the attack and said it has “nothing to do with Islam,” and that is terrorism.
