It is Monday, January 2. Happy New Year. Here are the top stories from the weekend.
Idaho murder suspect arrested
On Friday, law enforcement in Idaho announced they arrested a suspect in the murders of four University of Idaho students. The four students were stabbed to death in a house on November 13.
The suspect’s name is Bryan C. Kohberger and he was a PhD student at Washington State University studying criminal justice. WSU is right across the state border with UI, which is in Moscow.
Kohberger was arrested at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania. He said he is innocent.
Police said his white vehicle was the same one spotted near the Idaho victims’ homes on the night of the killings. It’s not yet revealed how he knew the four victims. Police said they believe the murder weapon was a type of long knife, but they said they haven’t found it.
Kohberger is expected to be extradited from Pennsylvania to Idaho to face four counts of first-degree murder.
The four students who died are Kaylee Goncalves (21), Madison Mogen (21), Zana Kernodle (20), and Ethan Chapin (20).
Barbara Walters dies at 93
Barbara Walters, who broke the glass ceiling in journalism by becoming the first female anchor on an evening news program in 1976 and became one of the best-known interviewers, passed away on Friday. She was 93.
She worked for ABC News’ evening program, then became a co-host of 20/20, and launched “The View.”
Walters won 12 Emmy awards and retired from doing on-air journalism work in 2014.
Jeremy Renner seriously injured
Actor Jeremy Renner was seriously injured in a snow-plowing accident in Reno, Nevada on Sunday. He was the only person involved in the accident. He was airlifted to a hospital and is in critical but stable condition.
Fox News explained that Renner has a home in the area. On December 12, he posted an image of a snow-covered truck with the caption, “Lake Tahoe snowfall is no joke.” Deadline reported that there was a winter storm in the area on New Year’s Eve.
Former Pope Benedict XVI dies at 95
The former Pope Benedict XVI passed away on Saturday night. He was 95 years old. His real name is Joseph Ratzinger and he was from Germany.
Benedict is best known for being the first pope in 600 years to resign when he did so in 2013. The current Pope Francis will lead Benedict’s funeral ceremonies on Thursday. Right now there are thousands of people who are at the Vatican to pay their final respects to Benedict.

Russia: 63 soldiers killed by Ukrainian airstrike
Russia’s military said 63 of their soldiers were killed by a Ukrainian rocket attack against a building in the eastern Donetsk region. Russia said Ukraine used a HIMARS missile system that was supplied by the U.S. News reports said Russian soldiers stored ammunition near the building and that resulted in a large explosion.
In separate but related news, the Ukrainian military said it shot down over 40 attack drones from Russia that were targeting the capital city of Kyiv. Many of the drones were made in Iran. There were other missiles from Russia that struck areas in Kyiv, killing at least one civilian and injuring 20.
Airport ground crew killed in accident
On Saturday afternoon at an airport in Montgomery, Alabama, a ground crew working for American Airlines was killed in an accident. A news report said he was “ingested” into the engine. The name of the worker has not been revealed. The plane was parked at the gate with the parking brake set. The airport temporarily suspended flights for several hours and then resumed normal operations on Saturday night. American Airlines released a statement saying it was devastated by the accident.
Brady makes it into NFL playoffs again
Tom Brady has made it into the NFL playoffs again and at 45 years of age. His Tampa Bay Buccaneers team secured its spot in the postseason by defeating the Carolina Panthers in a comeback victory. Brady said it felt great and that it’s tough to win NFL games. It is his 14th straight season that he’s made into the playoffs and his 20th playoff appearance in his 23rd season.
