Bronx apartment fire kills 17

In terrible news from New York City, a 19-story apartment in the Bronx caught on fire on Sunday morning and killed at least 17 people: 8 children and 9 adults. The blaze is blamed on a space heater that malfunctioned. The fire started on the apartment’s second and third floors and because the apartment door was open, smoke went up into other floors. Many of the victims were trapped by smoke. News reports said witnesses heard children screaming for help, bodies were carried off every floor, and that parents fell to the ground crying when they found out their children died. Many of the people who lived in the apartment were members of a Muslim community. NYC Mayor Eric Adams said the fire is “one of the worst fires we have ever witnessed in the city of New York in modern times.”

It is the second major fire in a U.S. city with many fatalities — last Wednesday morning a fire in Philadelphia killed 12 people, including 8 children.

LAPD officers rescue pilot before train crash

On Sunday, a pilot flying a small Cessna plane crashed-landed on a road right on train tracks. Several Los Angeles Police Department officers rushed to pull the pilot out just a few seconds before a commuter train came barreling and crashed into the empty plane. Here is a video from LAPD — I have to warn you that the pilot is bleeding from the face.

Very close! The LAPD said the pilot was taken somewhere to be medically evaluated. What happened? The plane was heading to land at a nearby airport but lost power and had to make an emergency landing. A witness on the scene said it was like the pilot escaped death twice. He is in his 70’s.

Djokovic released from immigration detention

In Australia, a judge ordered Novak Djokovic, the world’s top men’s tennis player from Serbia, to be released from immigration detention. Last week he flew in the country to compete in the Australian Open, but he had his visa cancelled at the border and was put in an immigration hotel over his status as an unvaccinated person. Djokovic applied for a medical exemption from the vaccine and that has set off a controversy in the country. The Australian government could still order his deportation. The tournament begins next week.

“Sea dragon” fossil discovered

In England, a fossil of a 32-feet long “sea dragon” was discovered. The animal is called an ichthyosaur and it lived about 180 million years ago. It’s skull alone is six-feet long. Scientists are excited about the discovery because it is one of the best dinosaur skeletons they’ve found. They said when this animal lived, it would have been at the top of the food chain, an apex predator, and would have been one of the biggest animals in the sea worldwide.
