Monday, August 31 top news briefs

Hello! It is Monday, August 31. Here are today’s top news briefs.

President Donald Trump announced he would visit Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday. The city has seen many protests after a 29-year-old Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot seven times in the back by a police officer, causing him to become paralyzed. Two protesters were shot and killed by a 17-year-old teenager who illegally carried a AR type rifle. That teenager, Kyle Rittenhouse, is charged as an adult with two counts of murder. His attorney said he was defending himself.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) sent a letter to the White House on Sunday pleading for Trump to not come, but the Kenosha County Board of Supervisors said they wanted Trump to come. Trump said today that he is still planning to come.

In Portland, Oregon, there were clashes between Trump supporters and protesters against police brutality. On Saturday, there was a caravan of about 600 vehicles driven by Trump supporters — many of them had large “TRUMP” flags. Some used paintball guns to shoot at protesters, who threw objects back at them.

A man was shot and killed on Saturday night. The man, Aaron Danielson, as known as Jay Bishop, had a hat with the logo of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group. OregonLive.com reported that a man named Michael Reinoehl is under investigation for the shooting. Reinoehl’s social media profile shows him attending protests in support of Black Lives Matter.

President Trump tweeted “Rest in Peace Jay!” on Sunday and retweeted a tribute to him that said Bishop “Backed the Blue” and “was murdered… by ANTIFA.”

President Trump did not tweet anything about the two protesters who died in Kenosha last week — their names are Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. Trump has tweeted many messages of criticism against Kenosha officials for not controlling protests.

Portland mayor Ted Wheeler recently said that Trump is responsible for causing the level of violence in America, for creating hate and division. Trump said Wheeler was a “dummy.”

President Trump said if Joe Biden is elected, there would be more violence in America. Biden said today in a speech that Trump has failed to protect America and he is now trying to scare America.

Now, here are some Covid-19 updates.

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. has surpassed 6 million as of today. Over 183,000 people have died from the virus. There is a 15% decline in new coronavirus cases over the past week, but six states had record high Covid-19 infections in a single day last week: Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Virginia.

A CDC study shows that 94% of the deceased had other health issues, which shows that the virus is especially dangerous for those with pre-existing health conditions.

There is a concern that the coronavirus is staring to spread again in Europe. Spain reported 53,000 new cases over the past week. France is reporting high numbers as well.

India has the world’s third-highest death toll from Covid-19 with almost 65,000. U.S. has the most deaths, followed by Brazil. Mexico is in fourth.
