Monday, April 20 coronavirus updates

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth. It is Monday, April 20. Here are updates with the coronavirus pandemic.

As of 4:00 this afternoon, there are 776,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States with over 41,000 deaths. 71,500 people have recovered.

New Jersey said that 40% of the over 4,300 people who died were associated with long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.

New York City’s Department of Education said 25 teachers have died from COVID-19. A total of 63 Department of Education employees died.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced that the state has received coronavirus test kits from South Korea that can be made into 500,000 tests. Hogan’s wife, Yumi, was born in South Korea and helped to facilitate the deal, which is worth $9 million. Gov. Hogan said one of the biggest problems in America is the lack of testing and that they are lucky they have a strong relationship with Korea.

There were protests over the weekend in various states and today in Pennsylvania by those who want stay-at-home orders to end. Many protesters were seen wearing pro-Trump attire or waving pro-Trump flags. President Trump said on Sunday that the protesters want to get back to work and get their life back. Trump said they loved America and was supportive of them.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said in an interview with ABC News that we should not reopen the economy too soon because we have to control the virus first. He warned that if we reopened too early, there could be a big spike (in infections) and then we would face setbacks.

More than 1,800 inmates at a prison in Marion, Ohio have tested positive for COVID-19. There are no reported deaths. 109 correctional staff have tested positive with one death.

The U.S., Canada, and Mexico have agreed to extend their border closures to non-essential travel for another 30 days.

New York state said they will start an antibody testing program by randomly selecting 3,000 people to see if they were infected with COVID-19 and if they have developed an immunity to the coronavirus. The test results will be available at the end of the week.

Oil prices have plunged. News reports say the demand for oil is at an all-time low and we can understand why, as many airlines have grounded planes and we’re not driving as much. Oil tanks are filling up with very little space left for storage. So, this is another significant impact of the pandemic on the global economy.
