Donald Trump found liable for sexual abuse and defamation

A Manhattan federal jury found that Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in a dressing room at a department store in 1996 and found him liable for defamation when he said Carroll’s accusation was false and that she was seeking publicity.

The jury said Trump should pay $2 million in damages for the sexual assault and $3 million for defamation, which brings the total to $5 million.

Trump chose to not appear during the trial. Carroll testified for two full days and faced cross-examination. There were colleagues of Carroll who testified that she shared what happened in 1996 and that she felt afraid to tell others because of Trump’s wealth and power with his many attorneys.

Trump previously said he would appeal.

This is yet another instance of legal trouble for Trump, who faces criminal charges in New York over a hush payment scheme and is under investigation by the DOJ for actions to overturn the 2020 election.

Biden wants airlines to pay if delays happen

President Biden said he and his administration want to see new regulations that would require airlines to pay passengers and cover the cost of flight tickets, meals, hotel rooms, and rebooking fees if they experience delays or cancellations that are preventable.

If you remember, during the past winter, there were massive flight cancellations and delays with Southwest customers among those impacted the most. The delays were caused by a massive winter storm but Southwest had software issues that caused a cascading effect of widespread delays.

NPR said airlines usually only pay back the cost of the flight ticket that was delayed or canceled. Biden said as of right now, virtually no U.S. airline offers cash compensation in addition to refunds or amenities, while Canada and the European Union have policies mandating compensation in addition to refunds.

The boy did not have any food or water for two days but ate a few handfuls of snow. He was from Wisconsin and those from his school said the school broke out in cheers when they found out that the boy was safe.

Author of book about grief is charged with murder

In Utah, an author named Kouri Richins, who wrote a children’s book on grief after her husband died last year, was arrested and charged with murdering her husband.

Prosecutors allege that Richins poisoned her husband by putting a lethal dose of fentanyl in a drink that she served him. The husband had five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system. Prosecutors said they charged her after talking with a person who claims to have sold the fentanyl to Richins.

Richins appeared on a local news channel in April to promote the children’s book and to talk about coping with her husband’s death. So it is a shocking update that she may have murdered her husband. The couple had three children.

Meteorite crashes through New Jersey home

A meteorite crashed through the roof of a home in New Jersey on Monday afternoon and the family who lives there said they are thankful that everyone is safe.

The meteorite is about four inches by six inches. It went through the roof and ceiling of the home before stopping on the hardwood floor of the home’s second story.

The resident, Suzy Kop, said the object landed in her father’s bedroom but nobody was home at the time. She said when she got home, she thought someone threw a rock into the room. She said she touched it, not realizing it was a meteorite, and that it was warm.

An astronomer told local news that the object could be billions of years old, that it has been running around in space all that time and now it’s come to Earth.

Pakistan’s former prime minister Khan arrested

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in a corruption case and it has sparked angry protests by those who support Khan in several cities.

Al Jazeera explained that Pakistan has been going through a political crisis for months. Khan recently accused an official in Pakistan’s military, which is politically powerful, of trying to kill him. The military rebuked Khan for the allegation and a few hours later, Khan was detained by a large group of paramilitary rangers.

Khan’s team released a pre-recorded video of Khan telling his supporters that he has been detained under an illegitimate case. He warned that fundamental rights in Pakistan have been “buried.”
