Marlee Matlin evacuates from wildfires; pushes back against criticism of interpreters

Marlee Matlin posted a video on Wednesday to say that she has evacuated from her home in the Los Angeles area due to the wildfires. She said it’s very emotional and stressful. She said she’s safe and staying at Jack Jason’s home, which is her longtime interpreter and business partner.

Alex: She said she’s praying for everyone. It was very touching to see Marlee in this situation and we hope for the best for her and her neighbors.

Marlee also pushed back on criticism from conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who said on his show that he thinks that sign language interpreters during emergency briefings shouldn’t take up “half the screen.” Kirk said that closed captioning should be enough.

[Video Clip, Credit: MediaMatters.org] (Charlie Kirk: Can we please just go away with half the screen during these emergency briefings with the sign language interpreters? I have nothing against, obviously, people that cannot hear, but there’s closed captioning. I mean, this is over the top. We can’t do this. We gotta get back to how it used to be. It’s just too much. It’s a distraction. What is the reason they do these emergency briefings for fires or terrorist attacks and you’re looking at this and you’re not listening. I don’t like it, so we gotta just (stay with) closed captioning. Perfectly fine. I think we have to get back to basics here…”)

Alex: Marlee said, “Too freaking bad. Just don’t look.”
