Missing 13-year-old rescued from locked shed

Police in North Carolina said they rescued a missing 13-year-old girl from a locked shed. The girl was abducted from Dallas. Law enforcement said they analyzed videos to figure out the suspected kidnapper’s vehicle and his identity. The girl was found in an external shed on the suspect’s property.

The suspect is a 34-year-old man named Jorge Camacho and law enforcement said he used a social media app to lure her from her home to his car. Police said he used grooming and enticement techniques to convince the girl to leave her home.

Camacho is now behind bars and is charged with rape, child abduction, and human trafficking. He is held on a $1.2 million bond.

Police encouraged parents to be aware of what their children are doing on social media apps, saying they have seen this type of case happen many times.

Biden announces deal on nuclear-powered submarines

President Biden announced that the U.S. would manufacture and deliver nuclear-powered submarines to Australia in a deal between the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. The partnership is called AUKUS. Australia is buying up to five submarines.

Biden made the announcement at a U.S. Navy base in San Diego with the prime ministers of Australia and U.K. Nuclear-powered submarines can travel farther and stay underwater for longer than other submarines.

ABC News said the partnership is aimed at countering China’s influence in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Biden said the three countries are committed to keeping the Indo-Pacific region free and open. Biden said the submarines wouldn’t carry nuclear weapons, just that they are nuclear-powered.

China criticized the AUKUS deal, saying the countries are heading down a path of error and danger.

People lost $10 billion to online fraud in 2022

The FBI said in 2022, more than $10 billion was lost by online scams, according to reports they received. Many of these scams involved “cryptocurrency investment fraud.” The FBI said people in their 30s filed the most fraud complaints last year, but people over 60 lost the most money, often falling victim to “call center fraud,” which is when people pose as tech support or government agencies.

The FBI said about $34 million was lost to ransomware, which is when hackers lock computers until they get money.

The most money lost is due to “business email compromise (BEC)” schemes. It is when someone impersonates a customer or a relative and tricks someone or an organization into wiring them money.

Cyclone Freddy brings deadly storms

Countries in southeastern Africa are being battered by Cyclone Freddy. CBS News said the cyclone struck the African continent for a second time on Saturday night, causing heavy flooding in Malawi and Mozambique. Over 100 people were killed.

Authorities in Malawi said first responders are completely overwhelmed and that residents had to dig through the mud with their bare hands to find survivors. The island of Madagascar was also hit.

CBS said the cyclone has been spinning around Southern Africa since late February, increasing and decreasing in strength. It may become the longest-ever recorded tropical cyclone.
