Man who killed Baltimore Deaf cellmate sentenced to 2 life sentences
Gordon Staron, the hearing man who pleaded guilty to killing his deaf cellmate in a Baltimore jail in 2022, received two life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The deaf cellmate who was killed was 34-year-old Javarick Gantt. I did a few news reports about him in the past. He was held in jail without bail due to missing court dates and meetings with his probation officers. His case was backlogged in Baltimore’s court system.
Gantt was accused of assault and groping but his crimes were minor compared with Staron, who was put behind bars after murdering a 63-year-old man with an axe at a bus stop. Staron was put in the same cell as Gantt, where he strangled Gantt to death about a month later.
Staron’s defense attorney said he had an extensive history of mental illness and substance abuse and had a long list of head injuries dating back to childhood. The attorney said he believes there’s something going on in his head that we can’t explain.
Gantt’s father said in court that they are still struggling to understand what happened and feels that “the system has failed” their son.
