LSD new supt; Gallaudet solar panels
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
Louisiana School for the Deaf has new leader
The board that oversees the Louisiana School for the Deaf announced last week that they have unanimously picked David Martin, who is hearing, to become the next superintendent of the Louisiana Special School District. The SSD oversees LSD and 18 other programs.
Martin is currently the superintendent of the Tennessee Department of Education School for the Blind. His LinkedIn page states that he was the TSB superintendent since June 2017.
There has been controversy in the Louisiana Deaf community over SSD’s leadership with its previous deaf superintendent and a deaf principal/director fired last summer and fall. There were protests on the LSD campus.
A representative from the Louisiana Association of the Deaf shared with “The Daily Moth” that while they were not happy with the search process for the superintendent, they remain optimistic with the selection.

Gallaudet auditorium has solar panels on roof
The second Deaf News brief is that Gallaudet University’s Elstad Auditorium has installed 393 solar panels. An article on Gallaudet.edu explains that “this new solar array will generate 150 kilowatts of power. To put this in perspective, each of the 393 individual solar panels can power up to 50 LED bulbs.
Gallaudet said the electricity generated will benefit the university and the local community through a Community Solar Program by providing access to clean energy to people in the local community.
That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
