Boeing’s Starliner reaches orbit in first crewed mission to ISS

Boeing’s Starliner successfully entered Earth’s orbit during its first crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS) after launching at 10:52 a.m. ET Wednesday from Cape Canaveral in Florida and reaching orbit about twelve minutes later. It was Boeing’s third attempt at its first crewed mission to the ISS after previous tries were scrapped due to technical issues.

Why does it matter? A successful mission is critical for Starliner to be declared an operational crew system by NASA and for Boeing to begin competing with SpaceX for additional missions to the space station. Aboard Starliner are veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore, who was serving as commander, and Suni Williams, who was piloting the spacecraft.

The spacecraft is expected to dock with the space station at 12:15 ET on Thursday. Wilmore and Williams are expected to spend about a week at the ISS to test components of Starliner before they return to Earth aboard the spacecraft through a parachute and airbag-assisted landing in the southwestern U.S.

Biden announces executive action on immigration

Facing mounting political pressure over the migrant influx at the southern border, President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed an executive action that will temporarily shut down asylum requests once the average number of daily encounters tops 2,500 between official ports of entry.

The new executive action bars migrants who cross illegally from seeking asylum – a departure from decades-long protocol – once a daily threshold is met, unless individuals meet certain exemptions. The measure could be turned on and off.

The shutdown went into effect immediately since that threshold has already been met. The border would reopen when there is a daily average of fewer than 1,500 encounters between ports of entry.

The move was an attempt to address one of Biden’s most urgent political problems in his reelection push. It came just weeks before the first debate between the president and his opponent, former President Donald Trump. It is the same authority Trump tried to use in office.

3-year-old dies, mother injured after being stabbed outside Ohio grocery store

A mother, Margot Wood, 38, is mourning the loss of her 3-year-old, Julian Wood, after she and her toddler were stabbed in what appears to be a random attack at an Ohio grocery store.

What happened? Around 3 p.m. local time on Monday, June 3, North Olmsted Dispatch received multiple 911 calls with reports of a Black woman wearing all black, who was stabbing people in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle grocery store.

The local detective said surveillance video showed Bionca Ellis, 32, of Cleveland, obtaining a kitchen knife from a nearby Volunteers of America store prior to the attack. Ellis walked into the grocery store, when she passed Margot and Julian. She then followed them out of the grocery store, to their car, with the knife in hand before repeatedly stabbing the mother and her young son.

Julian and Margot were both transported to a local hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the child died from injuries sustained during the attack. His mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Local officials said Bionca Ellis was arrested in connection to the crime. She has been charged with aggravated murder. They said it was a random act of violence as Ellis and the victims had no prior interactions before the incident. They added though Ellis had several prior arrests, none before Monday’s arrest had been for violent offenses.

NYC couple finds safe containing $100,000 while magnet fishing

A New York City couple got the surprise of a lifetime while magnet fishing in Queens – a safe containing about $100,000.

James Kane and Barbi Agostini visited Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens last Friday, tossing their rope fishing line with a powerful magnet on the end into a stream and pulling out a safe. After opening it, the couple found clusters of water-damaged $100 bills that amounted to about $100,000.

They contacted the New York Police Department to report their discovery in case it was a part of illegal activity. The couple said the NYPD told them they could not connect the safe to a crime because the money was in poor condition and there was no ID or hints of who the item belonged to originally. The police allowed Kane and Agostini to keep the money.

The water-logged bills are very soggy and would deteriorate more with touch. The couple said their next step is to take the crumbling money to the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., where they believe it can be reconstructed.

See a story about a Colorado woman who was cuffed in the back of a police car when it was hit by a train has been awarded a multi-million-dollar settlement from Alex. Here you go.

Handcuffed woman hit by train receives $8.5M

Thanks, Callie.

Two years ago, a woman in Colorado faced a terrifying situation — she was left handcuffed in a police SUV that was stopped on train tracks and was hit by a freight train.

The woman, Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, was seriously injured and sustained nine broken ribs, a broken arm, and other injuries.

Now the city of Fort Lupton and the town of Platteville, Colorado have reached a $8.5 million settlement with Yareni.

The officer who arrested Yareni was himself found guilty last year of reckless endangerment and third-degree assault and was sentenced to 30 months of supervised probation.

That officer, Jordan Steinke, said he arrested Yareni on suspicion that she was engaged in road rage and was brandishing a gun at another driver. There were other cops at the scene.

Steinke said he didn’t notice that the police vehicle where Yareni was was on the railroad tracks.

Videos from the scene showed that Yareni was screaming for help before the train slammed into the vehicle.

Thanks for the story. That’s all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
