Hello, it is June 3. Hope your weekend was good. Here are today’s top stories.
1 killed, 24 injured in mass shooting in Akron, Ohio
According to local police, one 27-year-old male was killed and 24 people were wounded by gunfire in an overnight shooting at a birthday party in Akron, Ohio.
The Akron Police Department said it received reports of a shooting just after midnight Sunday morning. Over 200 people were there with the gathering spilling into the street when police first arrived. Gunshot victims were taken to multiple local hospitals in the surrounding area. There were at least two victims in critical condition.
The victims range in age from 19 to 43 years old, with most in their 30s.
Local authorities said two handguns were recovered at the scene, but more weapons may have been involved. Evidence is consistent with a drive-by shooting, and people at the party may have returned fire. More than 35 shell casings were found at the scene.
No arrests have been made and police do not have any suspects.
Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial to begin today with jury selection
President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, faces three felony gun charges in a trial starting Monday that carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if he is convicted.
Special Counsel David Weiss charged Hunter Biden with crimes related to making false statements on a form when he purchased a firearm in 2018 that prosecutors allege he possessed while using a narcotic.
Hunter has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The trial in Wilmington, Delaware begins this morning with jury selection and is expected to last a few weeks at most.
This is the first of two trials Hunter faces this year. Regardless of the outcome of this trial, Hunter Biden is set to face a more complicated trial in California this September over his taxes.
President Biden has said that Hunter did nothing wrong.
Claudia Sheinbaum elected as Mexico’s 1st female president
Claudia Sheinbaum became the first woman and the first Jewish person to be elected president of Mexico on Sunday.
Sheinbaum is a physicist with a doctorate in energy engineering, the former mayor of one of the world’s most populous cities–Mexico City, and was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received a Nobel Peace Prize.
After her maternal grandparents emigrated from Europe to escape the Holocaust, Sheinbaum was born in Mexico City in 1962 – a city she would go on to serve in various roles across decades.
Sheinbaum, 61, won around 60% of the vote in the largest election in Mexico’s history. She is set to replace the outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her longtime ally whose social welfare programs lifted many Mexicans out of poverty, making their leftist Morena party favorite in the polls.
Sheinbaum has two children and one grandchild. Her partner, Jesús Maria Tarriba, is a financial risk specialist at the Bank of Mexico.

Simone Biles wins all-around title at U.S. Championships
Simone Biles won her historic ninth national all-around title on Sunday night to close out the U.S. gymnastics championships in Fort Worth, Texas. She won the gold medal on all four apparatuses and was nearly perfect throughout the entire competition as she gears up for a third Olympics run this summer in Paris.
The win in Texas officially clinched a spot for Biles in the U.S. Olympic Trials later this summer on June 27 in Minneapolis, about a full month before the opening ceremony in Paris.
Biles is now the first gymnast, man or woman, to win nine all-around national titles. Biles already owned that record after she broke a tie with Alfred Jochim for the record with her eighth win last year. That win also made her the oldest woman to ever win the title.
See Alex’s update on the postponement of the upcoming boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. Here it is.
Tyson vs Paul fight postponed
Thanks, Callie.
The boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul that was supposed to happen on July 20 on Netflix has been postponed due to Tyson’s health issues.
He recently had an ulcer flare-up during a flight that required medical attention. His doctors recommended him to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training.
Because of this, the fight will be postponed. A new fight date should be announced on June 7.
The location is AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tyson is 57 years old. Jake Paul is 27 years old.
Paul said he supports postponing the fight so Tyson will have no excuses come fight night.
Thanks for the update. That’s all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
