Deadly tornado hits Texas panhandle

On Thursday night, a tornado hit Perryton, Texas and killed at least three people and injured over 50 people.

ABC News said the north and east sides of the small town saw significant damage, with mobile homes destroyed and communication towers downed. About 200 homes were destroyed and the local hospital is without power.

Supreme Court upholds law on Native American adoption

The Supreme Court on Thursday, in a 7-2 vote, moved to uphold a law from 1978 that gives priority to Native American families in the adoption of Native American children.

The case was brought by the state of Texas and a group of non-Native foster parents who wanted to adopt Native children but were told that according to the law, Native American families had priority. They disagreed with the law and said it was discrimination on the basis of race.

The Supreme Court upheld the law. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote for the majority saying, “Congress’s power to legislate with respect to Indians is well established and broad.”

ABC News said the 1978 law, the Indian Child Welfare Act, was passed in response to generations of government-sponsored separation of hundreds of thousands of Native children from their families through the 1960s.

The law requires state courts to give first preference to a Native child’s immediate family, then another member of the child’s tribe, then a member of an unrelated tribe, before consideration of parents who are non-native.

Father fatally shoots three sons

In tragic news from Ohio, a 32-year-old father named Chad Doerman is accused of fatally shooting his three young sons, aged 7, 4, and 3 years old and wounding their mother on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the first call they got was from a woman who was screaming that her babies had been shot. A second call was from a neighbor who said a female was running down the street screaming.

When police arrived at the family home, they found the father sitting in front of the home and detained him. Police then found the three boys in the yard and tried to save their lives but all died. The mother had a gunshot wound to her hand.

Doerman was charged with three counts of aggravated murder. It is not known what could have driven him to allegedly commit the murders.
