CBS News reported that Jorge Guillen, 43, died and his wife, 35-year-old Lizette Zambrano, was injured after they were both shocked by an electric discharge in the jacuzzi at the Sonoran Sea Resort in northwest Mexico around 8:30 pm on Tuesday.

Officials are also working to determine what caused the electric discharge.

Ukraine updates: Biden, Zelensky sign 10-year security deal; G7 agrees $50bn loan from frozen Russian assets

President Joe Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement on Thursday at the G7 summit, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russian invaders and getting Ukraine closer to NATO membership.

Officials said the deal aims to commit future U.S. administrations to support Ukraine, even if former President Donald Trump wins November’s election. It also outlines plans to develop Ukraine’s own defense industry and expand its military.

Also at the G7 summit in Italy, the G7 agreed Thursday upon a $50 billion multiyear loan deal to fund Ukraine through profits on impounded Russian assets.

The loan is expected to be repaid using interest earned on $300 billion in frozen Russian assets, which are mostly in European banks.

The details of the agreement are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, and the money is expected to reach Ukraine by the end of year thanks to contributions from all G7 states – United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and Italy.

The aim of the deal is to ensure it can run for years regardless of who is in power in each G7 state.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced the G7 deal on frozen Russian assets for Ukraine, saying it is an act of theft and pledging retaliation.

Supreme Court preserves access to abortion pill

The Supreme Court threw out its biggest abortion-related case since overturning Roe v. Wade two years ago, saying Thursday that doctors opposed to a commonly used abortion pill lacked legal standing.

The unanimous ruling by the Court preserves access to mifepristone. They held that a group of doctors who oppose abortion but don’t take or prescribe mifepristone – couldn’t show they were directly injured. After the doctors argued that the injury is the time spent in the emergency room treating women who have taken the drug.

Mifepristone is taken with a second drug, misoprostol, to end an early pregnancy. Since it was first approved by the FDA in 2000, mifepristone has been taken by more than 5 million patients.

According to a study from the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion rights research group, medication abortion accounts for 63% of abortions in the U.S. healthcare system in 2023.

Pope Francis invites more than 100 comedians to Vatican

Pope Francis welcomed more than 100 comedians from 15 nations, including U.S. celebrities Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert and Conan O’Brien at the Vatican on Friday celebrating the importance of humor.

Francis told the comedians: “In the midst of so much gloomy news, immersed as we are in many social and even personal emergencies, you have the power to spread peace and smiles. You unite people, because laughter is contagious.”

He reminded the comedians that not only they make humans smile, they also make God smile. Francis also said it was OK to laugh at God in the same way we play and joke with the people we love.

After delivering his speech, Francis greeted all the comedians individually, sharing laughs and jokes with some of them.

See Alex’s brief on the site of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting being demolished.

Parkland's 1200 building to be torn down

Thanks, Callie.

The school building in Parkland, Florida where there was a terrible mass shooting on Valentine’s Day in 2018 will be torn down. The demolition was scheduled to happen after the last day of school.

The building is called the 1200 building at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. It’s where seventeen students and staff members were killed.

After that incident, the building was sealed off, becoming a massive crime scene and evidence for future trials. The classrooms inside had blood and strewn papers that were left untouched. There were broken glass and bullet holes.

ABC News said victims’ families were allowed to go inside that building for the first time last summer after the conclusion of the trials of the gunman, who was sentenced to life in prison, and a former school officer, who was acquitted of child neglect.

The school district said demolition will take several weeks. Future plans for the site could see it be turned into a sports field or a garden/patio.

Thanks for the brief. That’s all the top stories for this week. Have a nice weekend and stay with the light!
