Martin Luther King’s youngest son Dexter dies

Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, died after a battle with prostate cancer at 62. He dedicated much of his life to shepherding the civil rights legacy of his parents.

He was born in Atlanta in 1961 and was just 7 years old when his father was assassinated in April 1968. He was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as a pastor for the first time. He was said to have an uncanny resemblance to his father.

He became an attorney and worked to protect the King family’s intellectual property. In addition to serving as chairman of the King Center in Atlanta, he was also the president of the King estate.

His wife, Leah Weber King, said in a statement that he died peacefully in his sleep with me in Malibu, California. Rev. Al Sharpton shared that Dexter turned that pain of his father’s assassination into activism and he left us far too soon.

Supreme Court backs Biden over Texas border dispute

The Supreme Court is allowing US Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire deployed by Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.

The vote was 5-4. The justices’ order is a major victory for President Biden in his ongoing dispute with Abbott over border policy.

What happened? A federal appeals court last month ordered the Border Patrol agents to stop removing razor wire that Texas has put along the banks of the Rio Grande to deter migrants from entering the US illegally. The dispute had become especially fraught in recent days after three migrants drowned in a section of the Rio Grande that Texas officials have blocked Border Patrol agents’ access to, prompting the administration to further press for the high court’s intervention.

Illinois mass shooting suspect dies in Texas

The local news reported that a total of 8 dead bodies and 1 injured were found Sunday and Monday across 4 crime scenes in the south Chicago suburb of Joliet, Illinois.

Joliet police were seeking a suspect, 23-year-old Romeo Nance, in Monday’s seven slayings plus a homicide on Sunday. Bill Evans, Joliet Police Chief, said police do not have a motive in the shootings, but believe the victims are related. He said Nance knew his victims, but would not say how he is connected to them.

The suspect, Romeo Nance, was discovered near Natalia, Texas just outside San Antonio by US Marshalls on Monday – more than 1,000 miles from where the eight victims were found shot to death. He shot himself with a handgun after being confronted by officials, police said.

Israel proposes 2-month fighting pause in Gaza for release of all hostages

Axios reported that Israel has made an offer to Hamas in Gaza a two-month ceasefire in exchange for the release of all the hostages that are still in Gaza. There are around 130 hostages still there since October 7.

Israel said it would release a number of Palestinian prisoners as a part of the deal and would move Israel soldiers out of some areas in northern Gaza to allow Palestinian civilians to return to their homes if there’s a two-month period of peace.

The deal is currently being considered. Qatar and Egypt are helping with mediating the talks. There is also a U.S. official from the Biden administration involved in the talks. We’ll see if there can be a two-month cease-fire deal with the release of hostages.

Thanks for that brief. That is all the news stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
