January 1, 2021 top news briefs

Hello, it is Friday, January 1, 2021. Happy New Year! Here are top news briefs.

A Milwaukee pharmacist was arrested and accused of intentionally removing 57 vials of the Moderna vaccine from refrigeration for two nights. This ruined the vaccines. The vials had the equivalent of 570 doses. The man was identified in “The Daily Mail” as Steven Bandenburg. Police said they believe it was his goal for people to receive the spoiled vaccines and think they were successfully vaccinated. It is unknown why he wanted to do this. The vaccines were worth about $10,000, but they are far more valuable in the sense that they can save people’s lives.

A 23-year-old Black man named Dolal Idd was shot and killed by Minneapolis police on Wednesday night. Police said Idd was armed and fired at them first before the officers returned fire. A body camera video shows multiple police cars moving in on a car that Idd was in at a gas station, shots being fired, and Idd’s drivers side window shattering. The shooting is under investigation. It is the first police-related killing since the death of George Floyd in May.

The FDA warned pet owners about Sportmix pet food, linking it with 28 dog deaths. Tests of the food indicated it had high levels of aflatoxin, which comes from a mold that can grow on corn and other grains. The FDA said pet owners should contact their veterinarian if they used that particular brand of pet food. The owner of Sportmix, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. is recalling the pet food and telling pet owners to destroy the products in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access them.

Samuel Little, who is the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history with him confessing to killing 93 people, died on Wednesday night in a California hospital. He was serving multiple life sentences in prison. AP News explained that authorities have confirmed almost 60 killings and believe that he was not lying about the other 30 because he provided information that only the killer would know. Most of the killings took place in Florida and Southern California between 1970 to 2005. Most of the victims were women, many of them prostitutes or those addicted to drugs. Little said he just liked to kill people and that it felt like a drug for him. He confessed to the killings in 2018, saying he hoped the confessions would free anyone who were wrongfully accused of murder.

Illinois Gov. Pritzker announced today that he is forgiving and expunging 500,000 criminal cannabis cases. AP News explained that this was mandated in Illinois law that legalized the licensed sale of marijuana starting in 2020 and that the intent of the law is to reduce the impact of the war on drugs on minorities because they were disproportionately arrested and jailed for marijuana-related crimes.
