Deaf humor: ASR captions

Alex: See this picture of a huge pup.

Alex: On Sunday I was watching a football game. The captions seemed to be done by ASR — automatic speech recognition. I saw this.

[Video clip of the Cincinnati Bengals vs Kansas City Chiefs game. Both are tied at 21 in the fourth quarter. The captions say, “…Hendrickson. Big-time sack. Huge pup. But I think Mahomes…”The video freezes and zooms into the words, “Huge pup.”]

Alex: That made me curious and Google up “Huge pup.”

Alex: I watched another game and it seemed like the commentators suggested that the 49ers football team was relying on the flu to win.

[Video clip of the L.A. Rams vs San Francisco 49ers game. The captions read, “Yeah. This is — was an abysmal possession by the 49ers. Flu just got nothing going at all. Even if they make the catch…” The video “rewinds” to show a freeze frame of the words, “Flu just got nothing going at all.”]

Alex: Using biological weapons to hurt them? More likely not, but that’s what you get with ASR.
