Gallaudet star athlete Eric Gregory runs in U.S. Olympic Trials

On Friday afternoon, Gallaudet University’s star track athlete Eric Gregory ran in the U.S. Olympic Trials to try and qualify for the Paris Olympics.

He was in the second heat out of five heats. Unfortunately, the race was not broadcast on NBC Sports. Gallaudet University Athletics explained in an article that NBC Sports shifted the broadcasting window on Friday and didn’t show the first four heats. Gallaudet said it was a missed opportunity to spotlight Gregory.

The race is available to view on YouTube. I’ve provided a link in the description and transcript.

Gregory ran well and kept up with the other runners for the most part of the lap.

Look here at his starting position. He ran well and during the final curve here, you can see that he was close with everyone. But on the final stretch, the final 100 meters to the finish line, Gregory started to fall behind. He couldn’t keep up. Eric’s there.

He finished last in his heat, but finished in 27th out of 35 runners overall.

Gregory told Gallaudet Athletics that it was his “first real race that there was someone faster than (him).” He said he learned a lot from the race and that his biggest weakness is the last 100 meters. He said he now knows what he needs to do for the future.

His coach, Byron Moore, said that they are not disappointed at all that they didn’t move on to the semifinal round because Eric Gregory has only trained for three years in the 400-meter dash and that he will be back competing for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials four years from now.
