Europe is now reporting spikes in Covid-19 cases. The World Health Organization said they are very concerned that there could be 500,000 deaths from Covid-19 from now up to February.
Germany reported 34,000 new cases yesterday, which is a record high for the country. The German health minister said there is a “massive pandemic among the unvaccinated” with ICU beds running out in some regions.
Britain is now the first country in the world to approve Merck’s new anti-Covid pill to treat those who have mild to moderate Covid-19 infections. The British health minister said the pill is a “game-changer.”
The Covid-19 pandemic has officially killed over 5 million people worldwide.
Here in the U.S., we are averaging 71,000 new cases per day and about 1,165 new deaths.
Pfizer said they have developed a pill called Paxlovid that is able to prevent almost 90% of deaths from Covid-19 compared with placebo in studies. Pfizer said the pill is given twice a day for five days. Pfizer said they are still studying the pill and hopes to submit data to the FDA as soon as possible.

CNN explained that Republicans had a very successful election in Virginia because they not only won the gubernatorial race with Glenn Youngkin’s victory, they also won at least 50 seats in the Virginia House and will guarantee that Democrats will no longer have full control of the House.
Virginia also elected its first Black female lieutenant governor, Winsome Sears. She was born in Jamaica and immigrated into the U.S. at the age of six. She later served in the Marine Corps.
She ran on the Youngkin ticket as a Republican and said in her victory speech, “When I joined the Marine Corps, I was still a Jamaican. But this country had done so much for me, I was willing, willing, to die for this country.”
In October, the U.S. economy added 531,000 new jobs, which is a positive sign for the country’s recovery from the economic downfall from coronavirus shutdowns. The U.S. unemployment rate is now at 4.6%. The average hourly earnings is up to $30.96 an hour.
Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback Aaron Rodgers tested positive for the Covid-19 on Wednesday and will have to miss this Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. News reports said he is unvaccinated, which surprised many because when he was asked in August about whether he received the Covid-19 vaccine, he said he was “immunized.” Rodgers also said in August that he wouldn’t judge other players if they didn’t take vaccines, but he didn’t make it clear that he was among the “other players.” The NFL requires unvaccinated players to take additional safety measures such as wearing masks during media interviews or not going out to bars or nightclubs, and Rodgers didn’t wear a mask during media interviews and was seen out partying with others during Halloween.
Multiple sportscasters have said Rodgers was lying or disingenuous to the public and some have called for him to face some level of discipline.
